A wise man once said, “A man who will cheat on his wife will also cheat on his country.”.
The enormous irony is, of course, that I’m only trying to explain the news business to the hard of learning. Of course, everyone denies it now.
That’s the damn headline, people! Freeper some analysis up your own ass.
The denials are the only thing that have been remotely newsworthy. What else was the press supposed to report? There wasn’t even a real allegation.
It should be easy enough to find out what his ex-wife thinks about her depression and the divorce. In this book she talks about her divorce and in this book she talks about her depression. Looks like you can get both of them for under $20.
Yeah, it sould suck if he was caught being president of like, Uruguay, on the side. “It’s a small county, it didn’t mean anything!”
Very wise, indeed. I’d prefer the president not have sex with the country whatsoever. In fact, I think the country is very tired of being fucked with for the past three years.
Here you are, DtC. I hope this link is helpful to you: Link
With the parties having denied any affair, now the media (some is all it takes) will feel justified in following up on the story. Whether anyone likes it or not, some people think that any stupid statement a president or candidate makes – even about something like National Guard duty 30 years ago – should be rigorously tested for veracity. Gary Hart dared the reporters to follow him. They did. There was no President Hart.
Kerry has made a denial. The woman has made a denial. Her family has made a denial. Sound familiar? At one point in the Monica Melodrama weren’t we in the exact same place?
To be clear about a couple things, first, I have no freaking clue or interest in who John Kerry boffs. OTOH, lying about it will always create a shitstorm. That’s just the way things are. Bob Livingston, Newt, Gary Hart, whoever.
I was unclear before. I’m not saying that the National Guard controversy caused all these other scandals to surface. OTOH, McAuliffe calling Bush “AWOL” means that Kerry’s post-Vietnam War record – which I was unaware of until recently – will be a big issue in any Kerry v. Bush campaign. Which, IMO, sucks ass. Whichever party you think actually stands for something will still be attacked using the same slimy tactics you use on them.
OTOH, Kerry’s voting record is on the internet. Most Americans are not as anti-defense as Kerry has proven he is through his voting. That’s why you should pick moderates, BTW – to get them elected. That may not be a big issue for many people, but the reality is there for all to see.
One must predict the attacks on your guy. Getting bitchy about it isn’t very persuasive. To think that this is just going away, or is not having a major subsurface effect on what is going is unrealistic, IMO. It is interesting that Edwards has said he plans on running well into March. Dean is showing no signs of dropping out. Hmmm?
Thanks, GMR, I loved the bit about the Rapture.
Not really, lots of candidates keep running even when it’s obvious they have no chance of winning. Pat Buchanan, Jerry Brown, Jesse Jackson, Ralph Nader, etc.
So what was the purpose of this smear at this time;
(a) to draw a line under the Georgie being absent from the skies above Alabama and not protecting the good citizens below from the Vietcong Blitz thing, and/or
(b) reintroduce Democrat infidelity via guilt by association with Clinton
- kinda lets focus on Republican family values and never mind the draft dodging ?
Beagle, There isn’t any more “story” for the press to pursue. It’s over. There isn’t any Independent Counsel this time. No subpoena power. No tapes. No come-stained dress and most importantly, no allegation of any illegality.
And may I remind you that no one has even alleged that he fucked her?
What is there to investigate and how could any news organization possibly justify pursuing the personal sex life of a candidate when no criminal activity is alleged? Hell, no legal activity his been alleged. Nothing has been alleged. What is the story?
No idea. I must have went back and edited my post without really paying attention before posting it. My mistake.
And me too.
Diogenes, you betray your last name.
There’s plenty for the Republican smear machine to follow up on. After all, this is what they do best.
-
It’s a press story. Should the media report unsubstantiated rumors that KERRY HAD AN AFFAIR WITH SOMEONE?
-
Barring that it’s an internet story. Look at all the weblogs sporting rumors about KERRY"S SEX LIFE!!!
-
Ok, maybe it’s a negative campaigning story, about the RNC’s repeated refusals to DISCUSS THE RUMOURS SWIRLING AROUND THE LIBERAL-JANE-FONDA-DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE.
etc. etc. 7 more approaches to a non-story are discussed here.
You might be right Aeserion. Of course, as I’ve said from the beginning of this process, there is a process. Delegates and states are what matters. Let’s say that Democrats decided tomorrow to start voting for someone else.
They call it a “stumble”. “Momentum” is wrecked by things like VVAW, Jane Fonda, affairs, and the like – especially when the campaign is based on the war hero tactic and painting GWB as AWOL. So far, those things have given Kerry the Big Mo.
DtC Lying. Lying about National Guard duty, an affair, a HS grade, playing for a football team, getting a degree – anything.
I agree that there is going to be nothing to investigate in the future, so long as the two of them stay an ocean apart. Again, this article just repeats the same stuff and suggests to me that if the story is going to die it hasn’t happened yet.
It may soon. That could actually help Kerry, if there was some bizarre scheme to pin an extra-maritial affair on a politician that wasn’t actually having one. Has that ever happened?
Seriously, whatever one thinks about all the – many – stories that have finally surfaced in the major media about affairs with politicians, does anyone remember the story turning out to be false?
Um, hate to remind everyone but there was ZERO Democratic outrage when Larry Flynt put out a financial bounty on Republican liasons. Righteous hypocrisy is usually ineffective.
The Democratic sleaze machine only trails the Republicans in hard money.
I’m just telling you Democrats. I know you think I’m a Freeper, which pisses me off because I only know what a Freeper is because someone else called me that in the pit. I am actually between registrations. If you mess with me, I will register Democratic, give $10.00 once, and throw away the next 20 years of fundraising letters. That’ll cost ya.
Remember Sam Nunn? He was a Democrat I would have voted for. From Georgia, strike one. As much as GWB grates on me with his marital obsession, his martial ideas are more in line with my own. Unlike those on the hard left or right, I have to hold my nose to vote for any mainstream candidate. Anti-FMA, pro-Iraq War – bzzt
Ok.
-
There are no Democrats that pull any strings. There is no Democratic Establishment anymore, for better or worse.
-
I actually like Kerry’s voting record, or at least I did when I checked it some years back.
-
That said, I have believed for a while that Kerry would be pretty easy to smear as a “Massachusetts Liberal”. He lacks the common touch and had a left-leaning constituency. The Jane Fonda and sex claims are just manifestations. Modern Republicans have no difficulty making up facts to support their conclusions, as the sad WMD history shows. In response to this reality, I supported Clark and will probably vote for Edwards.
-
Ironically, Edwards is probably more electable (IMHO) as well as somewhat to the left of Kerry.
When the horse shit is piled this high you know somebody is going to insist that there is a pony in there someplace.
In any event, it is a nice distraction from weapons of mass destruction (to which the high and deep metaphore is also applicable), the transfer of wealth to the wealthy by way of tax breaks and negotiable instruments to finance the deficit, a phony half-a-loaf pharmaceuticals benefit on social security, the failure to run down BenLaden and the boys, the worsening situation in Israel and Palestine, Iraq teetering on the edge of civil war, a recalcitrant North Korea, the growth of Chinese economic and military power (which is scaring the bejesus out of the Japanese), American jobs fleeing to Mexico and China and the failure of the federal government to at least keep the exodus orderly, the over extension of American military power and the mobilization of more and more reserve and Guard forces to make up the short fall, the shrinkage of the Dollar against the Euro, the under funding of federal mandates on the education establishment, the increasing unaffordability of higher education at even state universities, the phony unemployment statics, the increasing intrusion of sectarian interests in the public business, the on going bribery of public officials through so called campaign contributions, the deterioration of the environment and the emasculation of environmental standards, and God knows what other pressing issues that will be resolved for good or ill in the next national election.
By all means let us all go ga-ga over a deflated trial balloon about Senator Kerry’s sex life floated by an unscrupulous scandal monger and concocted from wishful thinking and third hand rumors. If this election becomes much sillier and if the people buy this balderdash and elect George Bush then they deserve what ever happens to them.
Nah! They don’t deserve it, but shit happens.
Spalding: You forgot the red tape involved with tracking Al Qa’aeda money that Bush Co. has been uninterested in cutting.
You also forgot Bush & Rumsfeld’s refusal to plan for the aftermath of Invasion: Iraq. Apparently, they feared that such planning might weaken support for the war.
Let’s see. There is also the boring story of corporate accounting, executive pay and the expensing of options.
My head hurts. Let’s go back to the “character” question.
Nor should there have been any outrage. It was a perfect response to what the Pubs had done to Clinton for years. It showed up the hypocrisy of those who wanted to impeach a POTUS over a blowjob.
This may be true. I wish the Dems machine was more effective. It seems like they never get anything on the Pubbies that are equivalent to the Pubs ferreting out Vince Foster’s murder, Clinton’s drug smuggling in Arkansas, Kerry’s “affair,” etc. Of course the Dems may be hampered by a lack of imagination. They tend to be stick-in-the-muds about facts and evidence and reality and stuff.
Sorry, Beagle, if you got the impression I was calling you a Freeper. There are limits even in the pit and I would never do that. I just thought that the gist of your post was the same (if more literate) than everything I had just been reading on FR today. If anything I was accusing you of being a dittohead since I assumed that Limbaugh was the source of today’s talking points. I actually haven’t found your posts to be overly partisan or mindless and those seem to be the main two requirements for registration as a Freeper.
I’m not a Democrat, btw, I’ve voted for Dems, Greens, Socialists and liberal independents. You can’t pin me down.
Good on ya. I could almost vote for John McCain depending on the opponent (i’d seriously consider him over Lieberman, for example) and I could live with President Powell.
Oh…that Awol Bush thing? Kerry is calling off the dogs on that one. He’s asking the Dems to knock it off with the AWOL snipes.
Good thing I’m not a Dem.
