I’m sick of your fucking commercials. “a phone call can save you 15% on you auto insurance”.
MY ASS!!!
7 months ago, I got my renewal notice from AAA auto insurance. I thought it was a little high. So I made some calls. I called 21st Century. They were a little cheaper, but not enough to justify the switch. I called a couple of other places, which were about the same. I called Mercury, which was actually hundreds less, and who I switched to.
Then I think “I’ll call Geico. They must be competitive, right?”
Wrong. They are lying ass dogs. They wanted, get this, DOUBLE WHAT AAA WANTED Literally twice what AAA wanted for the same coverage. I was shocked. Of the 10 places I got quotes from, they were by far the worst.
Now I scream whenever I see that commercial. I got great news, Geico just saved me hundreds on my car insurance
AAAAAARGGGGGHHHHHHH!!! You SUCK!!! I’d like to see that annoying little fucking gecko squirming in my cat’s claws!!! I feel sorry for anyone who falls for that crap without shopping around. That’s the only way they could pay for those fucking gawdawful 24/7 commercials.
::whew:: Thanks, I needed to express that.
I have heard (forget where) that what Geico leaves out of their ads is that their target customers are those who already have extremely high rates; in other words, drivers with fairly clean records will NOT save money with them.
I do have to say, every time that little guy pulls into his reserved parking spot in his tiny little rockin’ convertible, I laugh my ass off. Every stinkin’ time.
But isn’t Geico the one that will give you prices on its competitors as well so you can compare them? Maybe that’s what they mean: “At Geico, we’ll tell you where to get insurance WAY cheaper than we’ll actually sell it ourselves.”
So you see, they might have saved people money; just not sold them any insurance.
Upon further thought, maybe I’m thinking of Progressive. Eh.
I’ve gone to Geico for quotes three times in the last few years. They have quoted prices considerably higher than my existing insurance company each time. Their commercials used to be cute but I’m sick of 'em now.
In fairness to GEICO, and FWIW, it makes a big difference what State you live in. When I lived in Illinois, I shopped around and selected GEICO as they offered me the best rate (by several hundred dollars, for 2 vehicles). Four years later, when I moved back to Michigan, I called GEICO to inform them of the change and get my new rate quote. I was shocked when the Rep informed me that my new rate would be double what I was currently paying. When I recovered sufficiently to regain my power of speech and questioned his reading/math ability, the Rep very candidly told me that GEICO is not rate-competitive in Michigan, and that I could probably get a better rate with another carrier. He was correct. I signed up with AAA Michigan for about the same rate I was paying in Illinois. I have no idea why GEICO chooses not to compete in Michigan, but there it is.
I don’t buy the argument that GEICO targets high-risk drivers in an effort to undercut the high-rate categories. At the time I signed up with them, I had been accident/ticket free for over 20 years, and my wife had been clean for 15 years. We are offered the best rate available regardless of the carrier.
Their quote for me was ridiculous, much like the OP’s, but my Mom saved a few hundred a year switching to them. I have a worse driving record than my Mom’s, but we live in different states (I’m in Florida, she’s in North Carolina).
We have two vehicles insured with Geico, and we don’t pay much at all. We’re both old and had clean records - until I had an accident in February. It was taken care of so quickly and coureously I was shocked. I spent 13 years in the Insurance industry, so I know just how bad some companies can be. I was pleasantly shocked at the lack of runaround and the great service.
My mom was pleased with them as well, a Geico insured driver hit her car (she was fine). They fixed it quickly without any b.s. or games. She was so pleased she was switching her policy to them.
I do State Farm myself- as once you start getting all the discounts (homeowners, multi-year customer, multi-car, good driver) their rates are pretty good.
And when I last checked with Geico (in 1992), they were screwing us in Maryland.
FWIW, I use Erie Insurance and they are by far the cheapest and have great service (for both the hitter and the hittee - being on both sides of the equation).
Huh, yeah they were cheaper than AIG late last year when I switched. I had Progressive for a while, then their rates kept going up, so I switched to AIG. Their initial rates were good, but after about 3 years, the rate was about 50% more than when we started, even without any accidents or tickets. I think my GEICO is about $1000/year for 2 drivers over 25, full coverage, 1 vehicle.
Actually, contrary to what was posted earlier, I think Geico concentrates on drivers who have exceptional records. They don’t want the high-risk drivers.
I’ve had three minor accidents in my life (none of them my fault), and I’ve driven for 20 years. My wife has never had an accident. She priced our insurance out a year ago, and was excited when she got her Geico quote back – they were considerably cheaper than Alfa, who was carrying our insurance. When she added me into the equation, though, the premiums skyrocketed, and the Geico rep told her it was due to the accident record.
