Change GD to GQ in the previous post . :o
I find it amusing that Konrad feels qualified to speak with authority on the motives that the Chicago Reader has for maintaining this website. Konrad, the CR has ample means available to tell us if we have been grossly misusing their website. If they felt the way you say they do, why have they never expressed these feelings? Why is it necessary for you to tell us what the people that run this site think of our use of it?
We have standards. The rest of us derive the standards that we use for posting here from things like the forum descriptions and titles, and the words of SDStaff members. We post material to GQ that is in keeping with what the description says, and with what Manhattan’s previous behaviour would indicate is correct. From whence did you derive the standards that you claim we are beholden to?
Justify your claims as to what the purpose of GQ is, or get the fuck lost. Remember that on a website dedicated to fighting ignorance, the voices inside your head is not considered a reliable source.
Careful now, water2j - according to Konrad it’s called a “blurb”.
This is so worth saying again. Konrad, pay attention here!
I would like to apologize to Konrad. I said that he was “infuriated” with people posting what (I gather) he considers to be piddling questions. He said nothing of the sort, and, in actuality, didn’t appear to be really that infuriated (initially) in the slightest. Perhaps perturbed, or slightly annoyed, but certainly not “infuriated.” Sorry, Konrad. I was exaggerating for emphasis, and unfairly characterized you as being more frustrated than perhaps you were.
Nonetheless, I still find the question to be incredibly nit-picking. I also think that is seems fairly contradictory for one who comes in and call others posts “crap” to be so quick to ask others to calm down. In other words, I think that it would’ve been best if you would’ve heeded your own advice before you posted in the first place.
Lighten up, Konrad. You’ll live longer.
ARCHER:
A noble sentiment, but I hope we can agree that the dumb question is the one that is asked, and answered, and asked again, and again, and again . . .
-gry question, anyone?
** waterj2, ** have I told you lately, you’re my hero???You just sound so much older than you actually are, I may have to change my opinion about past lives. You, sir, must have been a Knight.
1. Computer problems
I have posted computer questions. I did this after seeing others do the same. However I never post unless I have already searched the internet and computer-related forums. Sometimes the information isn’t there, other times there’s so overwhelmingly much of it or it’s so overwhelmingly technical it’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack. This board also get more speedy results than other fora.
As well as finding the answers to my threads very useful, I have also found the answers to others’ computer-related threads very useful.
2. Health questions
Doctors are not gods, nor do they have endless time to answer every question about an ailment. Sometimes you may remember something your GP said that you want a fuller explanation for. You may want alternative health advice. You may want support and advice from other sufferers. You may want to ask about a friend’s illness.
You may want to know if it is worth bothering a busy, overworked doctor with some problem that might be utterly harmless, when someone here can easily tell you it’s heat rash/sunburn/you can get an over-the-counter remedy.
You may be too scared, or too busy, to visit your GP and at least this forum gives people a chance to encourage you to get the hell to your doctor asap if your symptoms sound serious.
3. Free legal advice
Legal advice is expensive. It makes sense to share information about this. It also makes sense to find out in advance if something is illegal, so you don’t break the law. Laws also vary from state to state, country to country - you may be interested in an international perspective/debate. I find other people’s legal questions interesting even if I can’t answer them, because it shows me how different the law is in other parts of the world.
4. Homework help
Well, at least the student is bothering to do their homework. And this forum is an excellent way for them to get in touch with real-life experts (who probably know a hell of a lot more than their teachers, or who have far more updated information than their textbooks) who can add to their knowledge. SDMB certainly isn’t about cut-and-pasting essays for people. But it is about more learned people providing information, links, ideas to those less learned.
I hope this has answered your wonderful question, Konrad. After all that’s what General Questions is for.
What the fuck?
I read about ten responses wondering why all these blasts from the past had returned. Then I looked at the dates.
Please start new threads rather than dredging up ones that are almost two fucking years old.
Thankyou
pan
Woah - that’s really weird - how did that happen? Someone must have linked to that thread and I clicked on it, not noticing it was ancient. Sorry.
Ah, so in other words you fell for the same thing I did.
Well I can forgive that.
Thank you! Maybe someone should lock this thread so it goes back to its slab and dies a natural death?
