Generic vs. brand

Ok, so I’ve done a search and I haven’t found another thread with this, so if there is, sorry in advance:)

I’m looking for items that we generally call by brand names…i.e. you name that particular item by that brandname, even if it’s not that brand.

For example:

kleenex
q-tip
coke (regionally)

Here in the UK, probably one of the most common examples would be the use of the word Hoover to mean any vacuum cleaner. People here don’t vacuum their carpets, either; they hoover them! And if you look at the “Items for Sale” column in any local newspaper here, you’re bound to find an ad someone has placed, trying to sell a “Kirby hoover” or “Electrolux hoover”.

Of course, Hoover love the fact that their brand name is so ingrained into the minds of British folk. It all stems from the days when they were the #1 brand. Although Dyson have since taken over as market leaders, the lingo hasn’t changed at all, and probably never will.

Band-Aid
Chapstick
Xerox
Jell-O

I think those are all brand names, though I could be wrong.

Clorox
Saran Wrap
Velveeta (for any fake jellylike cheese junk)

think you’re right dippin dots! hadn’t thought of those

In some parts of the country – Frigidaire.

Does aspirin count? After all, it used to be a brand name.

Oooh, thanks for reminding me of another, Squish:

Tylenol (for any non-aspirin pain killer-like thing)
