Genre for Van Morrison?

I’m starting to load up my CDs into Itunes and I’ve started with my favourite artist – Van Morrison. But I can’t figure out what genre to put him in – pop? blues/r&b? rock? For any single artist I’d like to put all the works in one album in one genre. There is some stuff of his that is more obviously country, gospel, or Celtic, but what about the stuff, say, on “Best of”?

I’d go with R&B myself, but I’d be perfectly comfortable with rock.

Thanks, Kunilou.

How about “Balladeer”?

I just don’t think R&B when I think of Van Morrison. I’d go with rock myself.

I think pop would be fine. Of course I don’t have any of his recent stuff.

Blue eyed soul?

I think I’ll go with rock.

Being a big Van fan, I appreciate the unique characteristics of his work, but I think going with something like “balladeer” or “blue-eyed soul” kind of defeats the purpose of genre classification.

I categorize Van Morrison under “Celtic Soul.”

Well, he was one of the headliners at the “Bluesfest” here in Ottawa.

Just to further complicate matters.

Yeah, I’d go with blues myself. While some of his stuff does indeed rock, and most of his other stuff isn’t exactly blues, I do think most of his music falls more closely toward the blues category than any other.

Or perhaps you could just add a genre called “Van Morrison”.
