IMDB.com was of no help, and googling for ‘wtf’ is always an exercise in futility, so I turn to you, fellow Dopers, and beseech your wisdom.
Last night I watched Patton for the first time. Good movie, classic epic, I can see why it got a pile of Oscars. However, at the start of the movie, something caught my eye and I giggled helplessly.
When Patton is arriving in Tunisia, he’s part of a small convoy of three vehicles - a halftrack and two jeeps. The halftrack has two flags above the headlights; one with two stars (which I suspect is due to his being at the time a two-star general) and one with white text on a black background reading “WTF”.
Of course, I promptly went into multiplayer strategy game mode and said “Patton WTF j00 n00b camper! panzer whore!” Once I settled down, I began wondering just wtf WTF meant. Did anyone see this in the movie, and can anyone explain this?
In many online games, most especially first-person shooters and strategy games, there is a type of player who engages in l33t-speak trashtalk. A camper is a type of player who picks one spot and does not move from it.
Translated to English, that phrase would read “wtf, you newbie camper!”, probably spoken by the aforementioned l33t-speak player after he was just killed and feels it was quite unfair.
