How is the term “Department of Homeland Security” usually translated in German-language news publications?
My German is horrible but I would have thought it would be something like “Heimatssicherheitabteilung”. But Googling in German isn’t working well for me, and at least one page I’ve stumbled across makes it look like some German papers don’t even try to translate it:
Is there any “standard” translation of this term in German? Is it the same in Austrian and Swiss publications?

The usual translation is “Ministerium für Heimatschutz” or “Heimatschutzministerium”.
The “Reichssicherheitshauptamt” would be closer. That was the department that coordinated and controlled police and intelligence agencies, among them the Gestapo.

I’m not sure the person who said it meant it in seriousness but this site suggests that Gestapo isn’t too far off if not in name, then in function. Like the DHS, it was a national police agency charged with seeking those deemed enemies of the state, often using covert means.
