"Get Fuzzy" slides one past the censors

I cannot believe Darby Conley got away with this one. He regularly pushes a little bit against the limits of what one can get away with in a daily, mainstream comic strip, but this just left me flabbergasted.

I don’t know what the original date of publication was. On the 2008 desktop calendar, it’s the March 26 strip, and it’s copyright 2005. The setup: Rob announces that his mom isn’t cooking a turkey for Easter that year (she’s gone vegetarian or something), and Bucky complains, on the grounds that it should be a rabbit anyway.

Rob: “Rabbit? For Easter? What are you, crazy?”

Bucky: “Christmas turkey, Thanksgiving turkey, Valentine’s Day beaver, Easter Bunny. It’s tradition!”

Rob’s last line says it all: “Hold on … Valentine’s Day what?”

All you had to do was google “get fuzzy beaver” to turn up the strip. . .

Maybe it’s a Canandian thing?
hehe, he said “beaver”

Was your SafeSearch option on? Wonder what the other results were…

Believe it or not, I google-image searched get fuzzy beaver, with safesearch off, and it took til page 5 to get to a NSFW image.

Your mom.

Perhaps “beaver” was a compromise, because at first I thought of a different animal. Thought it wouldn’t have made sense with Bucky already being there.

Dude?

Sorry. Couldn’t leave it hanging.

Neither could his mom.

“Yeah man, they’re like magically delicious”

(OK, that was about eating Leprechauns for St. Patricks Day, but you know. :stuck_out_tongue: )

Yet one more reason to love Get Fuzzy. petting the copy of “groovitude” sitting on my desk

My husband brought home this exact comic to me yesterday. Silly me thought it was just another scrap piece of paper until he told me to read it. I re-read it twice, cause I was like, ‘whaaaat?’

Of course I asked if it was a coincidence cause there was SD thread on it too, unless I saw this thread was dated today.

Fried f&cking gold.

I love beaver.*

  • Reminds me of a time when the then-still-somewhat-recently disgraced Rob Lowe appeared on Dennis Miller Live. Dennis asked about Rob’s politics, and Rob said, “Well, Dennis, anybody who knows anything about me knows … I like Bush.”

Reminds me of the South Park episode where Cartman thought he was getting his period; the brand of tampons he bought was called “Beaver Dam”. Brilliant.
