Get on your bicycle and ride!

Figured I wouldn’t hijack ExTank’s thread again, but seeing it reminded me that here in southern Maryland, the bike-riding has been very good lately. Weekend before last, a friend and I rode about 35 miles together. Then this past weekend, a couple I’ve known since before they had kids came down from Delaware and visited with their teenage daughters. They do a lot of cycling together as a family, and we try to get together for rides a couple times a year. We did about 42 miles on Saturday, and had a great time together. It was on the verge of rainy at first, but by the time we finished, it was a high overcast with the sun trying to break through.

The rides I go on around here are through a mix of rural and exurban countryside. Since I’m 20 miles from the DC Beltway, the exurban stuff will eventually win out, but it hasn’t yet. I’ll have to post some pix sometime.

There probably won’t be many more rides this year, as the days get colder (and probably wetter); at 50, I’m a lot less interested in riding in grubby weather than I once was. But it’s been a good summer for riding, even if it didn’t have anything like my overnight ride from DC to Leesburg and back that I had last summer.

One thing that’s been going through my head lately is that my rides seem to top out at about 40 miles. I’ve been wondering if the limit I seem to be running up against is physical or mental. I expect I won’t find out until next spring…

…now it’s your turn. What sorts of good bike rides have y’all been on lately?

I seem to top out at 40 miles, too. Weird. My butt gets sore after 30-35 miles no matter how much I’ve been riding. I tool around town, but my faves are the Red Cedar Trail, which runs into the Chippewa River trail, and the Cannon Valley trail. For shorter rides and closer to home, I go to the Gateway Trail, just under 20 miles round trip.

Get on it? Heck, I just got off it! Dammit, I’m finally home from work and running errands… Oh all, right I’m coming…

My biggest problem is hand numbness. I can back reach to fight it, but nothing prevents it.

Numb butts are usually due to incorrect seat positioning. Consult your local bike store.
