"GET SMART"

What was “Agent 99’s” name on “Get Smart”?

I KNOW Maxwell Smart found out once… Internet Movie Database doesn’t say

According to The Unclassified Get Smart Site,

This information apparently came from the “Nick at Nite” 1999 Desk Calendar.

In the episode where Max marries 99, Max asks her “why didn’t you ever tell me your name.?” She replies, “you never asked.”

Haj

At one point, she did give her name as “Louise,” but that may have been an alias, too.

It was established that the Chief’s first name was “Thaddeus,” however.

Cafe Society is a better place for this, so I’ll move it.

When Max finally meets 99’s mother (portrayed by Jane Dulo) in episode “Snoopy Smart vs. The Red Baron,” the dialogue goes something like this:

(Max)
Well, I’m finally glad to meet 99’s mother, Mrs. . . ?

(99’s Mom)
99, huh? That’s interesting.

So, Mom didn’t spill the beans, either.

The Chief’s name was mentioned as “Thaddeus” in two episodes:

“Hot Line,” where John Byner plays LBJ’s voice in a “hot line” call to Control, telling the Chief that he’s being demoted to just an agent, and that Max is now The Chief. This episode also features a young Regis Philbin in a brief role as a baker in a bakery across the street from Control headquarters. I don’t remember the other one, but I know it was one with some weightlifting females, the leader of whom refers to him by name.

In yet another episode, the chief is asked to sign for a package being delivered (which contains the Max lookalike king of some country). The delivery guy asks him for his name, to which the Chief replies “That’s classified.”

We never did learn 99’s real name. Even after Max married her, he never called her anything but 99. Actually, that’s not true. He did call her “Ernestine” once, in a tender scene:

Max: Everything will be all right, Ernestine.
99: Max, that’s the first time you’ve ever called me Ernestine.
Max, romantically: I know.
99: I only wish that was my name.

Is there a reason why 99’s name was never given? Max’s name was given, and so was his number, 86. So it doesn’t seem to be a secrecy thing, unless 99 is a different rank or classification than rank.

It was just a running gag, like never seeing Columbo’s wife in his series.
