Get your milk and cookies ready. Iranian warships coming to US coast.

I, for one, bow down to our new Iranian overlords with their one destroyer and one supply ship.

BTW, does that even count as a flotilla?

Scared? This is a lighthearted thread mocking them. Our Navy will quietly shadow these guys and make sure theres no incidents.

But look at our own incredible stupidity building a fleet of guided missile cruisers the express purpose of which is to cruise European waters defending our allies against an Iranian ballistic missile nuclear strike, 22 billion plus dollars to defend against a threat that does not exist! The 1st cruiser is sailing for Spain now! This is a level of stupidity hard to comprehend, this might be the stupidest stupid thing I ever thought or heard of. They don’t have a nuke, they don’t have the ability to make it small enough to fit on a missile, they don’t have a dependable missile, and they have no reason in all the whole damn world to nuke Europe! Come on! They have a destroyer and they can sell it across the ocean, geez.

<<Being totally welcoming and cordial would probably cause their heads to explode.>>
Now that’s what we need: exploding Iranian heads.

What are you talking about? The US hasn’t built a cruiser in 20 years, and there’s no plans for any new ones. The main missile defense system planned for Europe is to put anti-missile systems typically found on US ships onto land. The cost of that effort is probably closer to $2 billion, not $22.

And the reason the US is building it is because we were asked to. It’s not like we randomly undertake billion dollar construction projects against the will of the host nation. (Well, I guess there was Iraq…)

China is the country expanding their navy.

Lt. Uhura, broadcast the following on all hailing frequencies:

"Attention Iranian Warships: WE DO NOT HAVE THE GOLDEN FLEECE!

My compliments to Captain Sinbad…"

Now, if only we could make skeleton swordsmen pop up on their ship a-la Ray Harryhausen…

Mind your manners. They’re Persians, not Arabs.

Meh. Even during the Cold War, US Coast Guard cutters did inspections on Soviet fishing trawlers in US waters. Hell, off duty crewmen would line the rails waving at the Ruskies and snapping photos.

They could never prove I was the one who told the crew “Yob t’voyu Maht!” was Russian for “Have a nice day!” Or maybe they didn’t want to try too hard.

Then again, the crew might have said, “K chortu, ya nie ponimayu!”

Is this the lighthearted part?

Maybe the lighthearted part was pointing out that the US shot down one of Iran’s civilian airliners in 1988, killing all 290 people aboard including 66 children; and further down in the thread somebody says “turn about is fair play.”

Though in fairness RickJay doesn’t appear to have been mocking when he wrote that.

The US insists on sending it’s vessels all over the world, I don’t see why the Iranians can’t return the visit.

I was just acknowledging that in this modern day any country has access to short range conventional missiles. Would Iran use them in this situation? I’d say there’s no chance at all. We’re not at war with them and there’s no current crises that would trigger an attack. Secretary State Kerry is negotiating with them right now.

So, I lightheartedly suggested we wish them well and bring milk and cookies as a gesture of friendship.

My God! Does that mean that hostile nations will now be able to launch conventional missiles at your major population centers? How can a country live like that!?

yes, what could happen from a country that is run by crazy people that celebrate a death to America day every year.

No, reckless and needless aggression is more of an American characteristic. See your quote for more detail.

We already gave them milk and cookies in the negotiations in the form of money. Who would have thought they’d send a destroyer all the way over her to thank us. Darn right neighborly of them.

I just hope nobody compliments the warships. Then they’ll insist that we take them, and it’ll turn into a whole big thing.

This Iranian “Destroyer” runs 1,500 tons.

By comparison, a US Arleigh Burke class Destroyer runs 8,400 to 9,800 tons, depending on ‘flight’ (read: model). Most of our Coast Guard cutters are as large or larger than this Iranian ship.
