I am suddenly getting logged out of the board after an undetermined period of activity. This seems to have just started happening today.
This came to my attention when I posted in a thread and then left the window open for a while. I returned to it later, refreshed the page to see if there were any new replies, then attempted to make another post. That’s when I discovered that I wasn’t logged in.
I am checking the “Keep me logged in” box when I sign in.
Using the latest version of Firefox on top of the latest version of Windows 10.
Also check your settings in the UserCP. Go to UserCP / Edit Options. Go all the way to the bottom of the page where it says “Forum Skin.” Select “Straight Dope v3.7.3.” Hit the SAVE CHANGES button.
IIRC those two things will ensure that you get in to the board smoothly and stay signed in.
Oops, my very first sentence should have ended with “… period of INactivity”, but hopefullty you knew what I meant.
Anyway, the first item with the URL was fine, always the case.
I was indeed using the alternative skin. I hadn’t thought that would have anything to do with it, as I was using that skin on Chrome before recently switching to Firefox, and it was never an issue there.
Is it a Firefox issue, then? I’ve had similar problems with the Disqus comment system on another site since switching.
Okay, so yeah, something is definitely wonky here. I’ve made sure that the URL is correctly formatted, and I have set my theme, both in my UserCP and at the bottom of the page, multiple times.
It is continuing to log me out when I leave, and when I come back the theme has been reset to “SultanTheme’s Responsive”.
I had already disabled my uBlock ad-blocker addon for this site before this problem started. I’m also using the “Ghostery” addon, which is a tracker-blocker, so now I’ve gone ahead and “Trusted” this site within that addon. We’ll see what happens.
So, after seeing some other threads and possible solutions, I dug in to look more closely. I have recently been accessing the board via a link to a specific thread, and it would appear that, somehow, when I bookmarked the URL the “s” got stripped out of “https”. I have no idea how that happened. It’s not an old link - the thread was created after I had already started using Firefox instead of Chrome.
Okay, I’m in Firefox right now (I usually use Chrome), lemme see if this thing works for me or if I duplicate your problem.
I just looked at your settings again … I see that you’re using the non-WYSIWYG version of the editor. Wonder if you would have more luck using the enhanced editor interface.
I didn’t change it – I will if you want me to – but you can do this for yourself, of course. Can you try that and see if that helps?
In the meantime, lemme see if this post takes and if I get logged out.
Huh. As long as I’ve been here (since 2003), I had no idea the WYSIWYG editor was a thing.
I haven’t been able to reproduce it either, so this may have been a one-time glitch. It also could have been related to cookies. As I mentioned, I use a tracker-blocker addon, which would affect cookies. But I did disable it for this site after starting this thread. I’ll re-enable it and save another bookmark and see what happens.
And yeah, after re-enabling the tracker blocker, I bookmarked this page, and it saved correctly. Enabled my ad blocker and bookmarked again, still no problem.
Looks like this was a one-time glitch, so I guess we can mark this “resolved”.
Maybe. I’ve had the same basic problem over three different computers and maybe 6-7 years now. Mine is more if I sign in and read without responding to anything. If I do that after about 5 minutes it logs me out. If I make a post I can read for as much as 30 minutes and still be logged in. I’ve just adapted to it all.
Came here and saw right away that I wasn’t logged in. I went to log in and a weird pop up with something about “Do I want to log in via <some mystery site>?” I clicked on cancel. Then I logged in normally.
That weird pop up was troubling.
And I haven’t had to log in on this machine in years.
(And I had to change away from Sultan theme. Egad, what an eyesore. Reminds me of Bad Web Design 101 from 20 years ago. No, you’re not supposed to control spacing at the user end that way.)
