Getting candle wax out of a carpet

Well, there’s not much to say here, the thread title pretty much sums it up. I spilled some candle wax on my carpet (during something which was not at all a bizarre, obscure, and somewhat sexual ritual designed to free a mighty demon from his eons-long enslavement in order to wreak havoc upon the land. At least, not as far as you people know…), and it needs to be gone when I move out of here. Now, the earliest I would be moving is a few months from now, so we’re not on a super-tight schedule… but I do need to address it at some point.

Does anyone have any advice?

Easy to fix. Roll of paper towels and an iron.

Take several layers of towels, place over the wax and apply the iron. When some melts into the towels, toss and repeat as necessary until it’s all gone.

I seem to remember from my batik class (it was the 70’s - so sue me) that once the aforementioned ironing has taken out as much wax as possible, a warmish to hot baking soda solution will soften the carpet back to normal.

So…, how’s the demon havoc going?

I asked the same question in this thread many moons ago, and the advice really helped.

Somebody said to put a paper bag down and then iron the bag. It worked great. I’m no expert but I think a thick paper grocery bag might work better than paper towels.

I would put an ice pack on there to make the wax very hard and brittle and try to pick off as much as possible first, *then *apply the blotting paper and iron methodology.

Well, you can try that if you want. But all I’m saying is that when I put the paper bag down and ironed it, it lifted up the wax like magic. I was amazed. And it was pretty fast too.

Proof once again that chemical cleaners are more expensive, dangerous, and are not needed. A brown paper bag and an iron will work.

Yeah, I guess so, although I hope the folks at Cedars Sinai are using the afforementioned chemical cleaners to clean the sheets and the OR scrubs, rather than using, say, a brown paper bag and an iron.

I’ve tried the paper towels and had better success with cheesecloth.

Depending on how much wax is there, I agree with trying to pick off as much as possible first before using the iron. Also make sure the iron isn’t too hot because you can melt your carpet.

Just as an aside, related kind of thing, which I know isn’t your particular situation:

Getting oil paint out of carpet: You can’t, really. Trying to use a solvent and scrub it out just spreads it around and makes it worse. You’re better off letting the paint dry, then snipping the tops of the carpet yarns off with scissors to remove the paint. Generally it isn’t very noticeable afterward.

Getting Sharpie out of carpet: Test this first in a corner somewhere to make sure that your particular carpet won’t “melt” from the chemical reaction, using paper towel and acetone (fingernail polish remover) works amazingly well for getting Sharpie out. And probably all permanent markers, I’d guess.

Getting cat pee smell out of carpet: I can’t sing the praises of this stuff called Just Rite highly enough. I’ve tried everything else, including those enzyme things, and this is the only thing that actually works. It comes with a giant syringe-style injector that helps it penetrate into the padding, and that helps a lot, too. I skip the “odor neutralizer” step, though, because IMO its own smell is too overpowering (it’s a deodorizer/perfumy kind of thing and I generally don’t like those as a rule.) Oh, and the guy who runs the company answers the phone himself and he’s really nice and can answer all of your questions
