Getting COVID twice

With the mounting breakthrough cases and the undeniable evidence that the vaccinated are much less likely to develop severe symptoms, my question is: What about the unvaccinated that get COVID a second time? Is there any evidence that they are less likely to develop a severe/life threatening case?

PS. Unless contraindicated, I think that everyone that can get the vaccine should. Full stop.

I have a friend who keeps insisting that having previously had Covid is as good(better I think he said) protection than being fully vaccinated. Is he right? I often find data of vaccinated vs. unvaccinated, but I never see “previously contracted Covid” as a category.
