Getting COVID twice

Is having Covid previously as good a protection as full vaccination?

I have a friend who keeps insisting that having previously had Covid is as good(better I think he said) protection than being fully vaccinated. Is he right? I often find data of vaccinated vs. unvaccinated, but I never see “previously contracted Covid” as a category.
