Getting gum out of a dog's hair

My dog got ahold of a pack of gum, took it to his crate to chew, and now he’s covered in it. His hair is too short to cut it off. Ice also hasn’t removed it all.

Any other ideas?

Peanut butter.

He’ll clean off the excess after you’re done.

Pointing and laughing?

No. Can we see a picture?

Oh, okay:

-If your pet has an issue with bubble gum stuck in its fur, use your fingers to work some Peanut Butter into the problem area and gently separate the hair from the gum. The oils in the peanut butter will help to break up the bubble gum making it easier to remove. (This is also a great trick for children with the same problem!)

-Chewing gum: recommendations for removing chewing gum from dog coats are similar to those for removing it from human hair. Use ice to freeze chewing gum on short coats and peel it off. Several applications of ice might be necessary. Use an oil-based natural product, such as peanut butter, butter, or mayonnaise to loosen the hair from the chewing gum. It should come out with just a little coaxing.

-if the gum has been rubbed right in (ick), a good solvent will remove it better than anything. Peanut butter works for this rather well.

For gum stuck in the hairs between his toes, it is best to just cut it off carefully, and keep those hairs trimmed to avoid further mishaps.

  • If you are going to clip chewing gum from the fur, first apply ice to the gum to remove stickiness. Then clip the affected area carefully.

Some groomers suggest “Shaklee’s Basic H.” You place a few drops on the affected fur and wait a few minutes for the gum to soften and remove with your fingers. Bathe and dry the affected area afterwards rinsing well.

You can also check with grooming suppliers for recommended products.

-Rubbing alcohol will also work. Don’t pour it on, but put it on a washcloth so it doesn’t dry out the skin, and rub to allow it to work it’s way out. I’m sure there are tons of solutions, but this one seemed to work for me…along with a good bath afterwards!

-Mayonnaise.
Mayonnaise will also remove chewing gum. Simply apply and work it in, gum softens and comes off easily.

Vinegar.
Saturate the area that has the gum on it with vinegar. The gum will actually dissolve. If the vinegar is heated first the process will work faster.

Peanut Butter.
Simply apply peanut butter to the offending gum and work it in. The gum comes right off.

Imagine a tri-color beagle with pink blotches on his legs, neck and tail. He must’ve rolled in it.

Thanks. I’ll try the vinegar first, since we actually have that, then buy some PB if that fails.

pbbth, we’ve done our share of laughing, but as a typical dog, he has no sense of pride for us to hurt.
