Getting it on with Progressive Rock

James Last passed on.
RIP

His band covered Hawkwind “Silver Machine”

Oh puleese…

Some effort people for pity’s sake.

At this very moment I am listening to Tarkus by Emerson Lake and Palmer.

Try YES.

Mahavishnu Orchestra

Ok (sigh) Wakeman but he can be a bit much.

The Mars Volta

I don’t get this love for Steve Miller as a prog man. He’s great in many other genres - but prog, not so much. The first side of Children OF The Future certainly qualifies as (wonderful) psych-prog, and Song For Our Ancestors was sort of proggy, but after that…what?

Admittedly it would be short popsike/prog lp.

First side Children Of Future flows like a concept.

Next two lps have at least one proggy/psych track.

What I DIDN"T mention though is the “Number 5” lp which for Wallace is their best.
First track is somewhat proggy. Almost all of side 2 prog-psych:

“Steve Miller’s Midnight Tango” (Sidran) – 2:40

“Industrial Military Complex Hex” (Miller) – 3:54

“Jackson-Kent Blues” (Miller) – 7:18

“Never Kill Another Man” (Miller) – 2:42

One of the problems with this is how to define progressive. I have always thought that you can’t do prog in three minutes or so. It has got to be looong. It needs to different in some way. While Recall The Beginning… is very beautiful, I don’t think it can be qualified as prog. It would be like calling Dan Fogelberg prog.

So what’s the over/under on how long it takes Wally to get banned?

Now there was a great prog band: Wally. If you don’t know them, check them out. Produced by Bob Harris and Rick Wakeman.

Agreed. A good progressive song has a three minute intro.

Dream Theater is my go-to progressive band, and they have Hell’s Kitchen and the intro to Change of Seasons… both of which are long enough to get their own track numbers on the CD, but which are recorded so as to flow directly into the next track like a long intro.

Aye.
Wally is good band. I prefer the second lp. (First has bit too much violin for me liking.)

Vehicle: don’t be calling me a “wally”. I no bin calling you a nineter, have I.

“Wally” is disrespectful.

You, perhaps, have something on topic to offer us here.

In contrast to this bitter devitalization, mebbe?

Aye.I know Wakiepoos produced Wally. (And MacDonald produced Fireballet.)
But I didn’t know about Harris.

Harris the BBC kiddie-fiddler? - like Jimmeh Saville???

Nah. Gatopescado beat me to it.

You are not only a Slow-Moving Vehicle, but an all-out BOLLARD.

A bollard to progress.
So please do not post here again.

Others actually wish to talk prog, you understand?

Warning Issued

You have been instructed to not sling insults in this forum. You have now earned a warning for it. Do not tell people whether they can or cannot post in any thread. You need to tone it down or your time here will be short.

Bob ≠ Rolf.

Interesting: how you make that "cross-out the equal " sign on a keyboard???

Identify the well-known 70s progband game.

Who is in for it?

Wow! That was gratifying.
So here is #1:

" some long spontaneous combustion that goes nowhere
for some Tim Hortons sugardog that is not there
And even his banjaxed brain
is shining fol-de-rol , quite insane"

Never mind the bollards, here come the Sex Pistols!

#2 “All hands on deck!” I heard the matron say.

Fail!

#1 = title track from Procol Harum lp “Shine On Brightly”
#2 = title track from Procol Harum lp, “A Salty Dog”
