Getting kicked off the net by new windows XP

HELP! I just updated my computer from windows ME to XP. Now when ever I’m on line I have about 10 before I’m kicked off and my computer totuly shuts down. When this happens a little window pops up and says something about NT authority/system shuting down my computer and to save anthing I’m working on. I have a 1 minute count down. It also says something about RPC service terminated unexpectedly. What does this mean and how do I fix it? Please help?

Ps: expect more computer questions in the near future from me. This update to XP caused more heartache then I think it was worth.

You ve got the Blaster virus!

Here’s what to do so your computer wont shut down:

Click on Start and then Run
type “mmc” and click OK
Then, File->Add/Remove Snap In
Click Add…
Then choose Services
Click Add and then Finish
Then Services will appear under Console Root
Click on Services and on the right panel all available services will appear
Find Remote Procedure Call and disable it

Now the computer wont turn off, but you still have to remove the virus and patch your computer. You can search www.microsoft.com about Blaster or MSBlaster for more info.

Dog80’s got you covered.
I’ll just add in the Blaster Removal tool

It sounds like you have the MS Blaster virus.

Here is Symantec’s page on this virus:

Microsoft knowledgebase article:

Use their removal tool, then run Windows Update (probably several times) to get all the security updates.

And install updated anti-virus software.

I seem to remember that you can retard the system c;lock during the 1-minute countdown to give yourself more time if it comes up while you’re trying to fix the box.

If you don’t already have anti-virus software, [URL=http://pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004SECURITY.htm#Anti-Virus lists several that are free for personal use.

If this system is not behind a hardware firewall, you will probably want to run firewall software as well. If it is behind a hardware firewall, you may want to check the configuration.

Sometimes I really yearn for that edit feature.
