I’m trying to find a automated service to find the ID info for some of my MP3s. In particular, ones that will find the album. I tried the winamp auto ID but it pulls up a few completely wrong songs (to be expected), but the big problem is that when it pulls up the album, it is 50% original album and 50% compliations (Dance Hits of the 80s, Essential Radio Mixes, etc.) Is there one that is especially good at pulling up the original album info?
Maybe later I’ll ask how to find the album cover if iTunes doesn’t have it.
Although this may not be entirely helpful…
You can manually find the album for a lot of songs using Wikipedia and/or Google. That’s how I did most of mine. As for albums pulling up as “Best Dance Hits of the 80s” or “The Coasters Greatest Hits” recognize that some very popular songs were never released on an album, but only as singles. I find this a problem for a large handful of my older songs. A lot of the automatic fillers may not plan for this and just give you the most popular “album” the song appears on.
As for album art, I whole-heartedly recommend Google Images. A suprisingly high percentage of the time, the album cover is all over the first page, even if it’s a common phrase.

I have found that Windows Media player is surprisingly accurate unless your ID3 info is all messed up, in which case you will get a lot of results in Japanese. However, if you have the patience you can use the Advanced Tag Editor to manually plug in the artist and song title (these are usually just mashed together in the ID3, which causes the confusion) and WMP will eventually find the right album cover for you.
You can also paste in album art yourself but for some reason WMP will blow the picture up so large it will be bigger than your screen.
This is my first time cutting and pasting a link from my phone so we’ll see if it works but for cover art I use this.
Are you wanting to read the “album”, “artist”, “title” tags from the MP3 file, or do you have un-tagged files and you want a service that will identify the info from the audio bytes?
I love mp3tag. The link is to the free version. You can get a pro version but it found it does most of what I need.
You can look at the menu on top and choose from Tag Sources and pick.
Try also Hydrogen Audio (Dot) Com
and look at their forums for “uploads” Those people are hard core music fans and a lot of members make their own small programs like Audio Art Downloaders. It’s too much to list here but you can a lot of great info there.
BTW dbPowerAmp is great but it’s not free. There is a free version but it doesn’t do much. If you want a great application and are willing to pay check it out. It does a lot of things automatically, and they have a great tagger, but it’s not free
