Well, it turns out that my parathyroids are definitely pissed off at me and now my doc let me know she is setting up an operation for me to poke around and see what they can do.
Any dopers have any experience with the procedure? Being operated upon doesnt really scare me, been there and done that a few times. I am more concerned with other issues.
I am sort of looking forward to the recovery time letting me seriously control my diet without having to work around my work schedule for a couple of weeks I admit=) Being diabetic, I need to make sure that I can get an appropriate assortment of proteins carbs and fats which will help me keep my glucose stable and heal better, so I am concerned about being on a restricted texture diet [you know, like having tonsils out makes you need a clear diet changing to a soft diet]
I am an inveterate side and stomach sleeper [sort of a recovery position] and literally can not fall asleep on my back. I have tried, and I just stay awake. Will getting my throat cut really give me sleeping postion positions?
I do plan on asking the doc these questions, but I have an abysmal track record in getting straight answers. Mostly I get told not to worry about it just to turn around and get figuratively bitten on the ass…maybe it was them being navy docs, and this is my first shot at a civillian no shit specialist.
You won’t be able to sleep on your stomach, but side sleeping shouldn’t be a problem. You’ll likely awaken from surgery on your back.
You diet will likely be on hold for a day or two. You’ll be given IV fluids and your blood sugar will be followed closely. You may not get oral feedings for a couple days, since anesthesia and pain management meds usually slow, or even stop peristalsis.
The first day after surgery, your calcium will be monitored very closely too.
Unlike a tonsillectomy, your throat won’t be sore, your neck will be. Tonsils are inside the throat, while parathyroids are attatched to the back side of the thyroid, inside the neck. Once you’re approved to eat a full diet, you shouldn’t have much problem.
I generally have no problem when awake [though i have been very close to death while on the table. After my last enforced nap I popped awake in recovery after 10 minutes, badgered them into sending me back to my room and had a chicken deathnugget meal within the hour, and was out of the place in 4 hours. I recover fairly fast=)
I understand the paras are inside the meat unlike tonsils, just worried about the muscle pain of swollowing. So this is not an outpatient job? My doc was pretty vague as she is just starting the process today to get me set up with Yale New Haven, I am figuring it is going to take at least 2 months to get me a timeslot…
