Moon Unit just blew all her savings on a DSI yesterday and of course is loving it.
But - as far as we can tell, it won’t work on our home WPA wireless (and frankly we wouldn’t want it - I don’t want her having internet access anywhere other than the family room, where her browsing habits are visible).
So, we went to the library today. They’ve got wi-fi, and it’s unencrypted. The unit found the SSID and set up the connection, but it’s trying to do some sort of software update, and the connection isn’t getting completed. A connection test just spins and ultimately comes back with an unable-to-connect message.
I’m willing to down grade the home access to WEP long enough to figure out how to get this working, but wanted to ask for suggestions in the meantime.
Partial update: I have been able to do it with the router in WPA2 mode, but I’ll want to remove that from the DSi once the updates are done to the DSi. So I could still use hints on how to get it to work with an unsecured WEP setup.
I’m not sure how to fix your problem, but you don’t really need to worry about her getting internet access from her DS. Apart from pictochat, you can only really do game-related things on it (multiplayer matches, etc), and even then, only with people you’ve personally exchanged 16-digit friend codes with. A huge pain and terrible design decision, but I guess it keeps your kids safe.
Exactly. Actually, it wasn’t installed when we got it, but I was able to download it when I first got things connected using the WPA access point at home.
She’s hooked enough on the computer as it is, I don’t want her having essentially unlimited access in her bedroom. Her judgement might not be the best as to which sites to go to etc. I’d worry less about it, accessing the web when she’s out and about at public wi-fi spots, simply because her access there is a lot more infrequent.
IIRC, the regular DS also had web access but you had to acquire the browser separately.
