One frequently hears about giant rats in the Ney York sewer systems or along the docks (I can name two giant rodents, one in Florida and that one who used to live in Sumatra :)), but what real basis in fact do these NY stories have? And do other cities have the same sort of animal “urban legends”, or is this something unique to the Big Apple?
That should be New York, of course. And a in the space after Sumatra. :smack:

Rodents Of Unusual Size? I don’t believe they exist.

Seriously, I know a man who worked for the water department for over 30 years. I asked him about rats in the sewers once. He explained that decaying sewage produces a toxix gas. It kills rats. So, no rats in the sewers. However, he did give me first hand accounts of the millions of giant cockroaches in the sewers. He also said that rats do infest subway tunnels.

Yeah, alligators in the sewer is a classic Urban Legend. The Mexican Pet is as well(American vacations in Mexico, finds cute puppy or chihuahua and sneaks it into the USA. In some cases the MP tears open cage and kills other pets. In others it just gets sick. Owner takes MP to the vet and learns it is not a dog, but a giant Mexican rat).
Mix the two, and you get giant rats in the sewers.
