So, I have a Christmas gift for my B-I-L that has a rebate available, but I have to open the blister pack in order to get the barcode. Would it be completely crass to do so or not? I don’t think I’ll do it; the fact that I’m questioning this at all makes me think it wouldn’t be a good idea, but I’m still interested in what others think.
In the past, my family just razor blades it. Take a blade and ctut a flap in the plastic, then cut the cardboard UPC, and fuld the plastic back over. It’s obvious what’s been done, but not so obvious that it distracts from the gift.

A nice compromise would be to go ahead and get the rebate, and then spend the rebate on a supplemental present for B-I-L. If he notices the UPC code missing on the DVD, tell him that you got a rebate on the DVD and used it to buy him the CD.
