I’d like to let any Dopers in the Greater Toronto Area know about a concert I’m doing at 12 Noon on Tuesday, May 24th, 2011.
I’ve been working on performing this kind of repertoire for a couple of years now, and it’s very exciting to be presenting a full concert of it in this venue - I’m honoured to say I knew Richard Bradshaw. If I’m very lucky, some of you might be able to make it to the performance.
(I asked The Mods’ permission before posting this, and it was kindly granted.)
Official SDMB Blurb: I got to see a back-channel clip of **Le Ministre **working through a couple of these pieces. The music is wonderful, ambient, rich - and the lyrics and vocal interpretation beautiful. Fascinating to see a trained professional stretch themselves with new work.
Actually, that’s a very good question - I haven’t investigated recording at all! I’ll get on it. (Eeek! One more thing to deal with! My head’s going to explode!)
Longer term, yes, I have plans of a CD and DVD, as I’m hoping I can turn this into a concert series, especially as I add more established 17th, 18th and 19th century repertoire.
So here’s the deal - I can have an archival audio recording, and I might be able to get an archival video recording, but I can’t do anything with them other than listen to/watch them myself. To be allowed to show them to anyone would involve a 5-hour minimum call for the IATSE crew in this venue. That will cost more money than I’ve got, (esp. with only the concert for income and a lot of outlay thus far.) so I will have to do a separate audio/video recording in a different location sometime this summer for my potential grants applications and self-promotion. I’ll keep you guys posted, though.
Very good crowd, quite enthusiastic. It went very well, if I dare say so myself. I haven’t worked up the nerve to listen to the recording yet; I hate, like the gates of Hell, listening to myself. Of the three composers, two were there to listen and they were both very happy. (Leslie Uyeda is in Vancouver, and I explained that if I had the money to fly her to Toronto for 5 minutes of music, I’d rather spend that money commissioning more music from her. She thought that was a better idea.) I haven’t been that nervous about a performance in years!
Better still, I’m in negotiations for another of these concerts later in the summer, and today’s presenter at least didn’t run screaming from the room when I suggested another one next year. Next step - putting some promotional DVD and CD recordings together, and putting some of it up on YouTube in the next couple of months. And when I do, I’ll be sure to throw a link up here on the Dope.
Tomorrow, I have to pick and work on repertoire for three performances on Thursday at three seniors’ residences, for the Health Arts Society.
Tonight, though, I’m changing the strings on Tristan, my baritone classical guitar, and enjoying (what I hope you will excuse me for calling) a well-earned glass of single malt. There’s the last of the Bruichladdich… Slainte!
