I love that someone beat me to posting that.
… and I think Kim Deal did her best songwriting with The Breeders.
Kurt Cobain freely admitted that “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was basically “Gouge Away” with the rhythmic pattern of Boston’s “More Than A Feeling.”
Pixies were great. I’m studiously ignoring the new album because I don’t want to ruin them for myself.
And in the world of horribly inappropriate songs used in commercials, there’s always Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon,” one of the bleakest songs ever about dying, in a VW ad a few years back.
She only wrote two or three Pixies songs. Black Francis really didn’t want anybody else to write for the band. And yes, I like Last Splash better than I like the Pixies albums I’ve heard.

There’s almost nothing on the face of it here - it’s a simple song, simply played - but the lyrics and general mood combine in a really dark, obsessive way.
"Debaser"
Slicin’ up eyeballs!
Hah! I was in college actually and a friend gave me a homemade cassette with Come On Pilgrim on one side and The Breeders’ Pod on the other. The same friend also got me into The Replacements, Pere Ubu, Throwing Muses, Opal and several other bands the same way - I owe him a debt. 'course he utterly failed to indoctrinate me with his love for This Mortal Coil, because they suck :D.
Love the Pixies though.
Nope. I quite like that song in fact. Plus, it’s a whole song, entire and complete. One I can listen to, or not listen to, whenever I please. The other is a fragment repeated ad nauseum whether I want to hear it or not. The commercial could play my favoritest song in the whole wide world and it would still irritate the piss out of me if I had to listen to bits of it many times a day over a period of weeks.
The only thing I hate about this I is that I end up singing Gigantic all day after hearing the ad and I just know one of my kids is going to pick it up. I love the Pixies, too.
I like their version of Here Comes Your Man (you tube link).
Their version? “Here Comes Your Man” is a Pixies song. Are you thinking of “I’m Waiting for the Man” by The Velvet Underground?
I always liked the video for “Here Comes Your Man.”
No, I know it’s their song. Other people have subsequently done covers, I guess is what I was thinking. Or, I guess I wasn’t thinking.
They did cut out all the verses. I assume that’s because the chorus is the fun and exciting part, but it could also be because the verses make it a little more obvious the song is about sex.
Overall, The Pixies haven’t held up too well in my opinion, but Alec Eifel is still one of my favorite songs.
They didn’t want it, but he built it anyway! brings a smile to face every time I hear it.
Why do you think that? To me, Surfer Rosa sounds as good now as it did in 1988. I’m sure a large part of it is nostalgia, Pixies were a large part of the soundtrack of my college years, but I think all those albums still sound great.
I busted out all the CDs and listened to them, and just found them kind of … weak.
Short little meaningless ditties, no substance and with the exception of Santiago’s nice riffs and Lovering’s tight percussion, little of note on most of the tracks.
Some good stand-out singles, but not as good as I remember. I like the *Surfer Rosa *album cover however. ![]()
But, Hey! Very few bands hold up well.
It might be a bit of a salacious subject for a commercial, but what song are you going to use? Really, on a subconscious level, all songs are about the penis, even “Happy Birthday”.
I have found this to be the case. I went back and was listening to The Replacements a while ago and just loved the songs. I have tried to go back and do the same with a few bands from the same era, including the Pixies and not found myself leaving them in rotation…
