Thanks for posting this…hadn’t seen the ad (no cable). I love the Pixies and think it’s a great ad. But, that’s one viewing and probably all I’ll ever see of it. Any ad gets annoying if you are subject to it over and over and over. The only exception I can think of is the three “unpimp your auto” VW ads with Uli Kunkel. I could watch those on repeat for days. “if you vant me to unpimp your auto let me hear say vhat…what?”
Huh. And Patty and Mildred Hill seemed like such nice old ladies.
I’ve always liked the song and I mostly like the ad. However, if I were ever in a planetarium lying on my back and you were above me holding up an iPhone, I would likely stab you in the ankle with a fork.
Oh, you know, the original song was “Good morning to you” which is clearly a reference to the “Morning Glory” of whoever was their lover at the time. Sheer filth that song.
It’s not. “Tame,” “Gouge Away,” and “Is She Weird” are all much better songs. I’d personally put “Silver” above it too, but I know that’s not most people’s favorite.
I didn’t know the Pixies as a teenager, so I had no associations. It’s a pretty, stylish commercial. I like it well enough.
But have you heard the Joan Osborne version?
No, it still has the, “I knows.” I like that song though, I must be depraved.
You don’t have to add Opal to the list, you already had three. Wait, that’s an actual band name? :YouTubes: OK, not bad.
Oh, you’re one of* those.

I know the ads you mean, but I didn’t recognize the name. I suppose I should actually watch The Big Lebowski at some point. The actor’s name is Peter Stormare.
And Disney once used “Semi-Charmed Life” for The Tigger Movie.
“Semi-Charmed Life” is about crystal meth. It’s not even subtle about it:
One reason why the Pixies might not “hold up well” is that they basically reinvented alternative rock music. They’ve been copied and imitated so much it’s hard to appreciate how groundbreaking they were.
It’s like the old joke about the movie Casablanca. “It’s just a bunch of clichés!”
I, of course, am a fan of the Pixies. I love the Apple ad. Great marketing.
Great song. I could never be friends with someone who doesn’t like the Pixies.
Pre-Mazzy Star Mazzy Star, with a different vocalist/keyboardist ( Kendra Smith ). They had hired Hope Sandoval as a backup singer on what turned out to be their final tour, then Smith suddenly quit and the band re-invented itself. Their best known album is just a bit more psychodelic and edgier with more keyboards. Though some of the earlier stuff could be pretty Mazzy Star-breezy as well.
I like both incarnations, really. But I find Opal slightly more interesting headphone music.
This thread will forever color the way I see that annoying, annoying song.
At least it amuses me now.
