Three blades is my limit. Anything beyond that and you’re just a marketing victim.
Guys talk about straight razors all the time. I simply can’t imagine being fussy enough to go to the effort. Yeah, your face is smooth. Who the hell cares? In three hours, it’ll be rough again. Who has time in their life to fuss over something so utterly trivial?
I have a theory that this new shave gel was developed by someone who ran out of shave cream and found only a bottle of lube - lubricating sex gel to use.
You’re right to a point, though I find that I spend about 3 minutes per shave more (on average) using the straight, and I don’t do the hot towel bit every time, but brother, if I don’t have the time to take care of my face, what DO I have time for?
Honestly though, it’s as much about money as it is about anything…
To wit:
The Fusion razor with 8 blades is roughly $35.00
$25.00 of which is the blades. Figure 3 shaves per blade (on the outside), and at 24 shaves, that’s about a dollar a shave just for the blades. Add in the $4.29 for the shaving cream, which lasts about the same time, and for 24 shaves, rounding up, it’s about 30 bucks, which, with my frequency of shaving (about every other day) it’ll last about 2 months. At the end of the year, if I keep to a schedule, I’ll have spent $180 dollars for the year, just on shaving supplies.
In 5 years, that’s $900. So, I spent $100 on a razor, $60 on strop and brush ($30 each) and $9 a year on soap (using only williams). The razor, with proper care will last forever, as will the strop. The brush will last about five years which means that’s about $6 a year over the aformentioned 5 year period. Oh, and I forgot the strop paste at $5.00 a tube lasting about 5 years, so add a buck a year.
That’s $80 over 5 years versus $900, an $820 savings. Granted, that’s only $164 a year, but that’s a quarter’s worth of mobile phone or home internet payments. That’s a dozen CD’s or 164 music downloads. That’s 18 tanks of gas for my motorcycle or 3 tanks of gas for my truck.
Frankly, I don’t see how you could NOT use a straight razor, because if there’s one thing I AM fussy about, it’s my money.
If it really only takes 3 minutes, I suppose that’s not really any more time than the other way. Of course, I use an electric, so I can do it at a stoplight . . .
I guess the math makes it seem a bit more reasonable . . . actually, that’s probably a tad cheaper than my electric.
Never mind, then.
They do have it, but those are full of chemicals that aren’t supposed to be used on the face or on any sensitive areas. See here for Nair for men. The other thing about those creams is that they do not keep hair away for weeks. A couple days, maybe, but the stubble comes back pretty quick.
(bolding mine)
Yeah, you’ve never seen my leg hair. It ain’t pretty. you know the “5 o’clock” shadow? I get that on my legs. After reading the testimonials here I’m thinking I might get one of those million-blade razors designed for men, and give that a shot.
You’re kidding, right? I shave my whole freaking head with a Fusion and I get a good 14-16 shaves out of each cartridge before it even starts to drag. That ought to equate to 24-30 face shavings for a normal guy. Plug that figure into your calculations and see what happens.
Even with my wire beard I get at least 2 weeks out of each cartridge.
