The Gillette Fusion razor, P.T. Barnum was right....

“There’s a sucker born every minute”

okay, i had to replace my Mach 3 razor because i dropped it and the little springy thing that pushes against the cartridge stopped working, so i was in my local Mega-Lo-Mart walking past the razors, and saw a display of the Fusion razors, as they were only $8 (power model was $9) i figured what the heck, it’s not like i have much to lose…

i compared the power model to the standard, for one dollar more, you get a little motor (of dubious effectiveness) that sends vibrations to the razor head that supposedly gives a better shave…, yeah, suuuurrre it does…, somehow a set of razor sharp blades vibrating as they cut seemed rather unsettling

besides, for that additional dollar, you gain a battery, but lose one spare cartridge, the non-power model has 2 cartridges (one on the razor, one spare), the power only comes with the one on the razor, you’re paying more for less, the non-power model can use the powered cartridges and the non-powered ones, the powered ones just won’t buzz, the power cartridges are also $1 more than the non-power

(something tells me the only difference between the Fusion Power and Fusion cartriges is the color of the paint on the cartridge)

so i picked up the non-power model as well as a free can of the Fusion shaving gel (what the heck, free is good)

Gillete claims the 5 blades are designed to reduce pressure and irritation on the skin, as well as cut closer…

then why after lathering up with the shave gel and shaving with the Fusion, both with and “against the grain” was the shave less close than with the Mach 3, but my skin was also red and irritated from the shaving process, heck, i can shave in the shower “dry” (not using shaving cream, just water) with the Mach 3 and get a closer shave and no irritation with a USED cartridge…

a few days later, i decided to perform an experiment, i shaved one side of my face with the 5 blade part of the cartridge, then the other side with the single blade trimmer on the back of the cartridge…

the side of my face i shaved with the single blade had a closer shave and no irritation, none

so, looks like that disproves the effectiveness of multiple blades (at least as far as my face is concerned), once the cartridge in the Fusion wears out, i’ll be tossing it and replacing it with another Mach 3, that razor actually works

on a scale of 1-10, i give the 5 blade section of the Fusion a 3, i give the single blade a 4, the Mach 3 i rate a 9

don’t bother wasting your money, more blades are not better

Yeah, but at least part of your money went to pay for the attractive models in the Gillette Fusion ads that are running non-stop these days. Although the marketing exec probably got paid more.

BTW, thank you for posting about your experience.

OTOH, my experience with the Fusion has been wonderful. I used to use a Mach3 to shave my head and face. The Fusion has been smoother, and I have never nicked myself with it, as I regularly did with the Mach3. Against the grain, full head, no problems. My wife even noticed that my head is smoother at the end of the day…less stubble by 5pm.

I don’t even like the Mach 3. I’ll stick with my 10-year-old Sensor, thank you. The M3 never gave me as close a shave, the pivoting head skeeved me out, and I never even used the second free blade that came with it. It’s still (inexplicably) in my medicine cabinet, though for the life of me I can’t fathom why I haven’t tossed it. I think I will tonight. On a related note…

Last time I bought blades, I couldn’t find the regular sensor blades, and had to but the fancy-schmancy 3-blade blades - they suck. Two blades (for me) is the effective glass cceiling for an effective, close, comfortable shave. As long as they keep making blades for the Sensor I’ll keep using it.

I just upgraded to the Fusion. It is a wonderful razor, and I like it a lot. The nice thing about Gillette products is that all tastes are covered.

I think you’re safe. Gillette hasn’t orphaned any of their products in recent memory. All of their cartridge razors that they’ve sold since 1972 are still available, as well as blades. Additionally, you can still get Gillette DE blades for the razors sold before then, though I don’t think they sell the DE razors now.

[SNL]Triple-Trac, cause you’ll believe anything.[/SNL]

See my earlier rant about the Fusion razor. I shaved with the Fusion today, and the job that it does on my face is just average. However, I shave my head against the grain, and I swear I’ve seen babies feel their own buttocks, then look at my head with envy.

(Boy, did I open myself up for jokes with that last line. Be gentle.)

And there was me thinking the Fusion was really for the ladies…

back in the early days of SNL, about the time the first twin blade shaver came out, they did a fake commercial for the new triple blade shaver, touting its virtues and superiority over the twin - and the tag line was - “three blades - because you’ll but anything”

that was “three blades - because you’ll ***buy * ** anything”

The Sensor Excel is still my favorite for facial hair. But the Mach 3 does a great job shaving the scrotum and base of the penis.

I use the Quattro right now but with blades about to end, I might try the fuzion. One of my roomies uses it with great success.

Ooooooh, you mean like koeeoaddi posted four hours earlier?

oops :o :smack:

Actually, David Hannum was the one who said, “there’s a sucker born every minute.” Hannum, a rival of Barnums, bought this giant stone statue thing named the Cardiff Giant for forty grand. People thought it was some acient, magical, or whatever statue, and so Hannum believed he could get a huge ROI on it. In acuality, though, it was an elaborate hoax from a tobacconist named John Hull, who had him carved, placed in New York, than dug out.

Barnum, realizing a profit was to be had, carved his own and called it the real taquito. When people flocked to his, Hannum remarked, “there’s a sucker born every minute.”

As for me, I got one for my birthday. As in, Gillette sent me one, in a box that said “Happy Birthday!”, which was really freaking bizarre. Why they know my birthday I’d probably not want to know.

Anyway, it just sits on my sink, waiting to be used. On the days I have low self esteem, I walk up to it, touch it just so, and reaffirm my position in the world. “I am alive, I am a human, and I am part of a civiliation that can produce this!” When I have high self esteem, I hide from it, knowing it’s 6 blades far surpass even my wildest scope of social mobility.

I’ve tried all the razors, 2, 3, 4, 5 blades with all the assorted gels, creams and mixtures, and I’ve tried electrics like braun and norelco, and still, nothing beats my Dovo straight with a cake of Williams’ shaving soap and a medium grade badger brush. Nothing. Now, I don’t shave my head, and I can’t imagine doing it with a straight razor, but for the kisser, a properly maintained straight is unbeatable.

Funny, that this subject should pop up again today. I did some watching of the other thread, and for the first time last night, I tried the fusion on my legs…

AND my parts.

It was wonderful. It was better than the quattro. I am not just a victim of the marketing. There was a noticeable difference. And NO nicks or cuts. Even on the parts.

I have the vibrating one, but that’s not why I liked it. Heh.

So I told my husband all about this thread, and he’s read the Master’s article on the subject, so when his face came out something like usar_jag’s description, we both looked at eachother, and said, I LIKE being a dumbass!

I use it with Aveeno shaving cream. Maybe that makes a good combination. All I know is that I’m here to tell you that if I rubbed a little baby oil in me, and ran real fast, I could achieve escape velocity from this orbit strictly on lack of friction.

I just bought it and it is far and away better than the mach 3, at least for me. When I use the mach 3, I end up with terrible razor burn for a couple days and it takes me 15 or 20 mintues to do it. When I use the Fusion, it shaves in about half the time and leaves me with no irritation and is also closer. I also cut myself far less with the fusion.

For my money the Fusion is an infinitely better razor. Maybe it makes a difference that I shave in the shower with no shaving cream…I dunno.

I balked at the current price of the Sensor Excel Plus cartridges. I saw Target brand for less than half the price. They need a little extra nudge to lock in place, and it seems like they don’t swivel as well. But the shave is closer and smoother than Gillette’s own cartridges.

Please feel free to elaborate! [/pant pant pant]
