For about a month now I have been re-watching "Gilmore Girls when I wake up at 4 AM rather than simply lying in bed and cursing the darkness. I have noticed that, in those episodes where the title characters’ stories are mostly divergent with only occasional intersections, I am very strongly tempted to skip over any Rory-only scenes. If the story is about Laura lie I am always interested, and quite likely I’m interested if it’s about Luke, Sookie, Lane, or even Emily. but if it concerns primarily the younger Gilmore girl and her bow of the season, I usually want to skip ahead.
My name is Skald the Rhymer, and I cannot stand Rory Gilmore.
Anybody with me?
(“Gilmore Girls” fans who can’t stand Lorelai are welcome to chime in with their own opinions. GG fans who can’t stand either of them can too, if only to explain why they are fans of the show at all.)
I watch Gilmore Girls together with my teenage daughter, so Rory is a pretty important part of the viewing experience for us. Personally, I don’t mind her, except that she has terrible taste in romantic partners.
To me, the show should have ended when Rory graduated Chilton. The Rory character started going downhill her sophomore year at Yale, especially when she started dating the smarmy rich kid, and that was a problem because I never liked Lorelei and Emily all that much.
I still have a problem with how the Palladinos have grown-ups throw tantrums (Rose in temple when Midge had a fur coat, for instance).
I realize that, technically, Emily has a claim to being a Gilmore girl, but I have never viewed the title is referring to all three equally. You could have an episode in which Emily did not appear without it seeming strange; the same was not true of either Lorelai or Rory.
That said, I go back and forth on how much I like Emily Gilmore. Very frequently I agree with Lorelai about her being manipulative and unpleasant, but there are not a few moments when she had my sympathies.
I like Rory. I don’t, generally speaking, like a lot of the storylines built around Rory. It’s a lot more bland and cookie-cutter and “beach novel”-ish.
Rory herself is funny and interesting, but watching her do generic “youth” stuff and generic “college” stuff is hard to care about. Other shows have done that better, and I don’t watch those either. The outlying highlights being her relationships with Paris and Lane; most scenes built around them are pretty watchable.
My favorite characters are Emily and Paris. What can I say, I like me some bitchy female characters.
I don’t like Rory in the way she tries to act wise and sage while she makes the same mistakes all youth do. Like she is above all the drama she is generating around her.
Luke gets the most sympathy from me, mainly because I can empathize with his relationship with LauraLei.
I like Paris too and funny when the actress shows up in other shows. A couple months ago my 28 year old son was with me and Mrs. Maisel was on. Son seemed to be mostly involved in whatever video game he constantly played but a scene came up and he yelled “Paris!” Sure enough, she was in the band or something.
And I didn’t know my son ever saw any eps of Gilmore Girls! No doubt just in background like this one, him video gaming while wife and I watched GG, many years ago.
