Gilmore Girls - New and Improved Lorelei 8/13/05

Well, it finally happened. Lorelei and Luke are engaged.
Rory got slammed (comparatively) in her sentencing for Grand Theft Boat.
Emily and Richard are completely confused as to why Lorelei has (yet again) withdrawn from the Gilmore family.
And who would have thought it, but Paris seems to need Rory around.

I liked the way the show picked right up where it left off at the end of last season, just like they did last year with the Rory-Dean tryst. I wonder if they filmed the end of last season and the beginning of this season at the same time, or if they’re just really good at maintaining continuity.

The small touches I liked:

  • When Taylor turned off the lights, there was still a light blinking on one of the sawhorses around the pothole.
  • Babbette nearly having heart failure in her rush across the square just to beat out East Side Tilly on the Rory-Lorelei rumor.

But Michel is really starting to wear on my nerves. He’s okay in one small scene per episode, but there was just way too much of him at the house with Emily.

Looks like this season is going to live up to some of the best we’ve seen thus far. Amy Sherman-Palladino is still at the helm, and I think that’s a good thing. What do youu think?

Loved it. I liked the idea of Kirk being some sort of gigolo/ male companion for older women, and therefore having alot of antique jewelry to sell. I usually hate it when Lorelai and Rory are fighting, but I think this plotline makes sense. Both characters need some time apart to grow and mature and really appreciate each other as adults. I agree with you about Michel. Small doses is best. I also think that he should come out of the closet too. And the shirtless Luke scene? WOOF!

I am so glad that the Sherman-Palladinos are still working their magic.

See, the thing is, I’m SO torn by this show.

As a guy I feel like a dweeb for liking it but I have such a crush on Lorelei that I don’t think I can give it up :o

You’re not alone zoid. I’m here for you…

Yeah. I first showed up for Lauren, but I stuck around for the writing.

I’m a guy, and I don’t feel like a dweeb for loving the show even a tiny bit. I’d love it even if Lauren Graham weren’t such a babe; it’s the dialogue that does it for me, and I love the keen eye the writers have on the nature of the relationships, especially the essential ambiguity of Lorelai’s dealings with her parents. Neither side is completely right or completely wrong, though Lorelai is closer to the right than her parents; it’s not that they’re bad people, just tht they were the wrong parents for her.

But of course, Lauren Graham’s insane hotness is a plus. I also perved a little at Rory walking about in her bathroom, sad to say; and though I generally prefer small boobies, Paris is a nicely insane little hottie.

I agree with zoid, but disagree with all the Michel-hating going on in here. I agree in principle that there is a point at which he’s no longer funny, but I don’t think they reached that point in this new episode. Michel and Emily together has a lot of comic potential. They did get close to that point, though, so I do see where you are all coming from.

Me too, man. Me too.

Also, I completely expected Paris’s reaction to Rory leaving Yale. Paris isn’t close to many people, but she depends on the few she is close to. And yes, I have the hots for Paris too. I do think she’s starting to show her age a little, though. She stretching the limits of believablity for a college junior.

I like the path they are going with Rory. She was pretty unlikable toward the end of the last season which was pretty daring for the show to go to.
It looks like Logan is going to actually be the one to help bring her back from spoiled rich girl world he helped introduce her too. He liked Rory as the good girl and a stabilizing force… now she’s too much like himself.

I was fine with the amount of Michel in this episode. Curt however is starting to get too ridiculous. I liked when they used him as jack of all trades so they could insert him into any service role they needed but now you can count on a “WACKY” Curt plot or scene in each episode.
Does anyone else think Luke (or rather the actor playing Luke) is wearing a hair piece?

I wasn’t too disappointed. My wishes for the new seasons are as follows:

–Less Stars Hollow Townie action. They’re just not that funny anymore. I can deal with maybe one plotline of quirky townie action per episode. We’re in the sixth season now, and there are too many characters I actually want to see but don’t.

–Speaking of characters I want to see, this show keeps Babette and Taylor in nearly every episode but drops Lane, Sookie, and Rory’s father and sister’s plotlines for insanely long periods of time!

–Rory has gradually bought into the entitlement attitude, and it sucks. The show has been starting to explore class issues a little more, and I hope it doesn’t hold back. If Rory had to find a roachy sublet to crash in during her time off and work at the mall to afford rent and Ramen, maybe she’d reconsider getting all mopey about one little criticism. There are legitimate reasons for taking time off, and her “I’m a grownup, I can do what I want” rings pretty damn hollow in her Poolhouse of Freeloadery.

–In the same vein, she needs to be written as a more realistic college student. Her ambitions of journalism from when she was 16 (or younger?) are noble, but as a 20-year-old studying at Yale, surely she’s had the time to feel out other options. She’d be amazing in history or English or…lots of other things. But journalism? She’s a terrible people person. She doesn’t seem to have the sense of adventure she claims she does, unless it involves impressing some cute boy. Hasn’t anyone ever talked to her about this? Guess not.

Lots of big wishes…

I generally agree with these sentiments. I think it’s a bold move on the part of the writers to have Rory go through a period where she’s rather dislikeable.

As to her journalistic ambitions, however, I don’t think it’s too uncommon for young people to pursue careers that don’t necessarily suit them; some people don’t figure this out until well into adulthood.

As for the other characters, I do like the interaction between Lorelai and Sookie and would welcome more of it. I also like Lane and think she could carry her own spinoff, although I suspect that won’t happen.

There’s no hate for Michel on my end - I just have to work too hard to understand what he’s saying. Yes, he and Emily’s scene worked well together (aside: I like how Emily stopped being a caricature starting a couple of seasons ago. Especially the night she was going on a date, and called Lorelei in a panic. “Who is this? YOU in ten years!”), and maybe if he was more of a developed character, then maybe I’d like to see more of him. But he’s just this child-hating anal-retentive person with a strange accent.

Unfortunately, Rory will probably never get to the point in her life where she is living paycheck to paycheck on Ramen noodles. She may not always take advantage of it, but she knows her life of poverty is a thing of the past since she’s back in her grandparents’ lives. So about the only conflict she can have is between her and her mother. It’s being presented very well, IMHO.

Oh, yes. Her speech about, “I’m an adult! I’m independent!” when she’s living in her grandparents’ poolhouse and using a lawyer they paid for and tacitly allowling everyone to blame Logan for her stupid (albeit understandable) acting out made me want to slap her.

(But I don’t slap girls, of course, so I chose to focus my irritaion 'pon Richard.)

I was thinking about the use of the supporting cast the other night, and I think they’re on the right track, actually. It seemed odd for Lorelai not to turn to Sookie, but given the time frame of the episode (Sookie’s just given birth) it was entirely realistic. Lane, on the other hand, definitely needs a spin-off. With Rory at yale (admittedly not an issue just this sec), her story is wholly disconnected from the show it’s interesting, and I like it, but I can see a casual watcher saying, ,“So who is this asian chick and why do I care? She’s clearly not a gilmore girl.”

We should start a lane spinoff petition. I’d do it myself if I weren’t so damn lazy.

Considering that the band just left for a Christian College tour at the end of last season and this season picking up literally SECONDS after the last one ended… It might be a while before we see Lane. And that is sad.

I am surpised that Surly Punk Butt, Jess is the only character they tried to spin off.

I can do with less townies myself. The show isn’t Nothern Exposure its Gilmore Girls.

I was telling someone who’d never seen GG about it the other day & it occurred to me- we’ve been told & it’s been shown ad nauseum how sweet & smart Rory is, and how she has such rapport with her Mom. Now it’s obvious (tho her BF problems with Dean & Jess indicated this) that she is so emotionally fragile at the hint of rejection.

I’d love the idea of Richard & Emily realizing that they are just enabling Rory & setting her up for a collision with reality. Rory was poor before but Lorelei was taking care of her & working for the Lady Innkeeper, so she didn’t really feel the bite. Now she needs to get nipped a little.

Btw, for all her smugness at being a nonconformist rebel, Lorelei does need to be
taken down a peg occasionally- as does Emily. Richard, I think, does the best he can to manage them both. No wonder he’s behind his newspaper so often!

I can totally see my life becomming just like Richard’s in 20 years (minus the boat loads of money of course)

Actually it needn’t be that long since GG typically skips very quickly through the summer months. Between seasons 1 & 2 and 2 & 3 and 3 &4 they jumped over it entirely; and thereafter, I think, they’ve covered the whole three months in about 3 episodes. Also, since Lane’s story is pretty much divorced from Lorelai & Rory’s even when she’s IN Stars Hollow, there’s no reason we can’t see how the tour goes.

Liza Weil looked like she lost some weight between seasons. She actually was normal looking before since most of the other women aside from Liz Torres and Sally Struthers are incredibly thin. I know some people thought she was pregnant, but I think it was more a case of seeing a woman who was normal-looking.
