Gina Carano is ignorant AF, but cancel culture is really getting ridiculous

As long as nobody starts an IQ thread.

Although I pretty much agree with everything you say, I think it’s possible for these self-deluded losers to do a lot of damage in the meantime. They would rather burn everything down rather than admit that they’ve fooled themselves.

Can we be friends ?

And if those people hold the wrong political opinion , it doesn’t matter does it.

They also have a lot of latitude to do damage and burn stuff down because they have very clearly established that they don’t consider themselves bound by any standards of civil discourse or public service. They can lie, cheat, grift, steal, misrepresent and rabble-rouse all day long, and their audience, painstakingly brainwashed by decades of right-wing media “alternative facts”, will willingly blame it all on Democrats and their “socialism” and “Marxism”.

Meanwhile, the Democrats and liberals are still accepting the responsibility for trying to actually govern in the public interest as constrained by the dictates of factual reality. For decades, that ethical principle has frequently put them at a huge disadvantage when competing with Republican/conservatives who have no particular aims beyond winning office and enriching themselves, and don’t care how grossly they have to lie or cheat to do so.

I concur that in the long run, being principled is good policy as well as good ethics for Democrats/liberals. But it takes a long while to get through the long run, and in the meantime, as we’ve seen, the Republicans/conservatives can get a lot of short-term advantage out of not being principled.

It’s not so much the opinion as it is the lack of evidence to support that opinion. People who choose to believe things in the absence of evidence are usually treated pretty roughly here.

“Joe Biden stole the election,” and “Covid is a Chinese plot,” aren’t “political opinions,” they’re delusions.

Nobody’s getting fired from Disney for their opinions about marginal tax rates.

Which ones do you mean by “those people”? We traditionally have not been all that bound in our “political opinions” by conventional partisan labels here on the SDMB: we’ve had anti-abortion Democrats and pro-civil-liberties evangelicals and welfare-state Republicans and anarchist libertarians and IIRC one actual Communist who was quite strong on gun rights.

But sadly, over the years, as Republicans and conservatives have more and more identified their group ideology with blatantly anti-factual beliefs (e.g., “climate change is a hoax”, “Obama’s going to take away your guns”, “Obama is a socialist Muslim Kenyan communist”, “radical Muslim-extremist terrorists are a worse threat than radical right-wing white-supremacist ones”, “COVID is a hoax”, “deficits don’t matter unless a Democrat is President”, “trickle-down economics works”, “mask wearing pandemic protocols are a plot to strip us of our freedoms”, “there was massive voter fraud and the election was stolen”, and innumerable similar lies), they have shifted squarely into the pro-ignorance camp.

Of course, there are still many Republicans and conservatives who are knowledgeable and rational about non-political subjects, and such views on such subjects are still respected around here. There are even some self-identified Republicans and conservatives who are still knowledgeable and rational about some political subjects, and those views are worth listening to as well.

But official Republican and conservative ideology these days has aligned itself shoulder to shoulder with ignorance, misinformation, outright lies, dishonest false equivalences, and blaming their opponents for their own misdeeds and screwups. That’s not going to be welcomed in any enterprise devoted to fighting ignorance, so it’s not surprising that a lot of Republicans and conservatives are getting a chilly reception around here nowadays.

Let see - almost the entire democratic world is left of the US at this point, even left of the Democrats. We have quite a few people from outside the US.

Also, quite a few folks who are left by US standards are here, and it’s not like that’s anything to be ashamed of.

You say “leftist” like it’s a bad thing…

And yes, we are better than reddit, but not because of politics.

Yes, I’m sure collecting tolls on your bridge and intimidating the Gruff family is exhausting work. Poor dear. Of course we don’t want you to over-exert yourself.

They’re hoping we’ll chase them, I guess. Don’t know why anyone would bother as they always seem to return far sooner than we’d like.

So… you’re on Putin’s payroll, then?

You are welcome to hold any opinion you want here, so much the better if you’re polite and considerate to others, but I strongly suspect your opinion is not the majority here and if that is true other people will share their opinions as well, and it may be that the majority disagrees with your opinion.

Facts, however, are not subject to subjectivity. We do not do “alternative facts” here, or alternate realities.

One of the facts the far-right has not yet come to grips with is that they have been lied to. Over and over. Trump did NOT make America great. They were never going to arrest Hilary, much less lock her up, and Trump most certainly did not win the 2020 US Presidential election. As just three examples.

Gina Carano has every right to think and say whatever she wants. As does every leftist, rightist, or extremist. And I have every right to tell their employers that I will not give them my money while they employ these people. I don’t expect utopia, I just don’t want my money going to these people. Enough of me & of course the corporations fire them – because of course they don’t care about right/wrong. The whole point of a corporation is to make money – show me a corporation that doesn’t change their products to match public demand and I’ll show you Blockbuster.

You know conservatives have no real principles and they only care about free markets because they generally work in their favor. But they drop the pretense and whine and cry like wet little babies whenever the invisible hand of the free market bitch-slaps their face instead of stroking their package.

But here’s what I don’t get. Conservatives are supposed to be astute businessmen that run lean profitable operations. They claim to be successful due to their “conservative principles.” They chose a businessman as their President. They portray liberals as a band of undisciplined socialists looking to smother businesses to death with pillows of regulation and mandates.

Yet conservatives can’t boycott a business for shit. It’s like every time they all vow never to shop at a large liberal business the world shrugs and laughs.

And all the big companies, all the massively successful financial concerns, all places where butthurt Republicans are desperately seeking work, are liberal, and run by liberals. Buffet, Bezos, Bloomberg, these are among the people the Republicans are trying to paint as radical socialists.

What’s hysterical is that there are Republicans dumb enough to believe this, to believe a man who once sold vitamins for $140 buck a bottle, claiming they were special because they were matched to your nutritional needs based on an analysis of your pee. And to make the con look real, they actually had their customers send in some pee with their order. And the man who executed this scheme is the cult God of the Republican Party. And this is absolutely true, that’s how fucking stupid conservatives are.

If we hire Republicans to work for our profitable well run businesses, they might be stupid enough to fall for stupid shit like that with company money. And I expect that’s why, despite comprising half the population, Republicans have approximately 0% of the disposable income purchasing power in the mainstream economy. They’re all so goddammed stupid they lose every penny they don’t need to literally not starve to grifts like Trump pee vitamins or Alex Jones emergency food buckets, or they send it to people like Lara Trump so they’ll be protected from leftists. Which turned out to be a bad investment in the last election cycle, but the gullible rubes will never learn.

At this point, I’m pretty sure companies are deliberately courting right wing outrage, because it has virtually no actual impact on their revenues, but is great at getting their brand name out there.

Like, how sure are we that somebody actually asked Disney about Carano before they released that statement about her not working for them anymore?

Dear Conservatives,

Why do you repeat literal Nazi propaganda if you don’t like being confused for a Nazi? Curious…

Take a breath. Your nonsense to non-nonsense ratio is getting quite high.

How much of your purchasing is of goods from China? It’s easy to signal virtue when it has zero cost or inconvenience.

Go fuck yourself, you brainwashed troll.

You are fixated on some weird subjects. With your huge liberal bank account can’t you afford therapy?

Uh, she is describing the nonsense that conservatives like you are falling for.

The word you’re searching for there is “sense.”

I suspect he forgot there was such a concept as “sense”.
