Giora Epstein, Ace of Aces.

I saw this on the History Channel International. Seventeen kills against Egyptian aircraft, most in the Yom Kippur War.
The Israeli Air Force site.
He retired at 59 to fly for El Al.

His Wiki page.

Impressive score. But the pilot known as the ‘Ace of Aces’ was Dick Bong.

That would actually be Manfred von Richthofen with eighty or so.
I think the reference is to Israeli Aces.

Richthofen was known as ‘The Red Baron’.

Dick Bong was known as ‘Ace of Aces’.

Certainly Richthofen had twice the number of kills, and Epstein’s score was indeed the highest in his war. I don’t want to belittle his achievement. It’s just that in the U.S. the appellation referred to Bong in the popular consciousness.

The term ‘Ace of Aces’ is applied to a country’s top ace in each conflict, so there is no one ‘Ace of Aces’ – unless you’re talking about the one person with the most kills. That would be Erich Hartmann.

Which raises the interesting question of how “fitting” the term “Ace” is nowadays, when air-to-air combat is comparatively uncommon and is generally carried out with radar-locked or heat-seeking missiles- an entirely different kettle of fish to WWI aces trying to get their Vickers or the Lewis or Spandau machine-guns to bear on an enemy aeroplane that was probably less than 100m away. Even WWII air combat took place at surprisingly short ranges and still generally involved machine-guns and cannon.

That’s not to belittle the achievements of modern fighter aces, just that when I think of a “Fighter Ace” it’s someone like von Richthofen or Collishaw or Bader or Galland.

Holy shit.

snerk The highest-scoring air ace is called ‘Bubi’.

EDIT: Thanks for the link.
