A recent “incident” occured in Cork (Ireland) recently where a 13 year old girl said she was raped by a gang - over 5 guys and 2 girls I believe were supposed to have been involved. She told the story that she and her 17 year old friend were walking home at 10 pm one night when the 2 girls grabbed her phone from her and ran off, the 17 year old friend running after them. This left the 13 year old with the guys - she said she was raped by one of them up an alleyway.
When I heard the story first, I was horrified that such a thing could happen - that 4 guys would stand around watching another guy rape a child (of course, I know that these things happen but its still horrifying). The story was all over the news and the papers for several days - everybody saying “whats the world coming to” and rightly so.
Last night I was sitting reading the Sunday paper and, in a tiny little 5 line paragraph, it was reported that the girl was actually lying because she had lost her phone and was scared her parents would be mad at her. The girl fucking lied about being raped while others watched - she had the cops looking for days all because she lost her bloody phone.
I cannot believe that time and energy and other scarce resources went on this stupid lie - of course it must be investigated, I’d flame the cops who would say it shouldn’t but I am really mad at that silly little bitch who did this. What about the others out there who now might feel even more scared of reporting a rape in case the cops think she’s (or he’s) lying too? What about the resources that could have gone to an actual victim to help them? What about her parent’s anguish thinking their child has been raped?
I cannot believe this girl - what kind of moron is she??? It was only a bloody phone for God’s sake… I really hope she’s learnt some major lesson from this but somehow I doubt it.
of course it only deserves a 5 line paragraph! did you honestly think that “girl Owns up to lying to police and potentially ruining peoples lives” would sell newspapers?
Well… yes… The media went mad when they thought she’d been raped (as rightly they should if she really had) so they should be equally as indignant when they found out she lied about it.
A 13 year old girl in the Dutch town of Hoogezand, claimed to have been assaulted and raped in her own home by seven Turkish boys. She claimed they afterwards set the house on fire. She didn’t mention the boys by name, though. There was an outrage about it, but from the start the police did not quite trust her story. Rightly so, as it later turned out she herself had set the house on fire and made up this story as an excuse.
In febr 2003, the girl was condemned to 50 hours of community service and five months of probation. She also is obliged to seek psychological help.
Should that be a reason to say “oh well, so what, happens all the time”? No I don’t think so… it isn’t new to me at all (as you say, men and women play all types of horrible games with each other), but I can still get really pissed off when they behave that way. And someone should point out that its morally wrong, whether a girl or a guy does it. Its wrong - simple as that - and I’m allowed to get annoyed at it.
What will the world be like when we all shrug our shoulders and say oh well, so what, happens all the time.
Before we crucify this 13-year-old we should take a look at what kind of family she was growing up with. It could be that she had good reason to fear an extreme reaction from her parents over a lost phone. Then again, it could be that she’s just a self-centered bitch.
A teenage boy had parties in his father’s house while his father was on vacation. To hide the evidence of the parties, he…burnt the house and its contents to the ground.
So in your twisted little fucked up world its OK to save yourself an ass beating by trying to send someone to jail for a VIOLENT FELONY they did not commit. If the parent find out later she was lying shes probably in for an even bigger ass beating than the lost cell phone in the first place.
If we were talking about you or me, we could have lost our job and or family from this kind of false accusation. Why in the world would you think this kind of blame deflection bullshit would be acceptable or emotionally healthy to reinforce to anyone, child or otherwise.
Feck sake, drachillix. I don’t think he was saying that it was “ok” - just that she might deserve our pity and not merely our contempt.
When I was at university in upstate New York a girl in the dorms had the shit beaten out of her. She initially claimed it was a black stranger who’d entered her room in the middle of the night. This turned out to be a lie and, understandably, caused quite an uproar on campus. It turned out that she had been beaten up by her own father. Without condoning at all the story she’d made up, it was really hard not to feel some amount of sympathy for her after finding out the truth.
I’m not in Ireland and am not familiar with the details of this case, but from what’s been posted here it doesn’t appear to me that the girl was “trying to send someone to jail for a violent felony they did not commit”. Did she name names? Did she point the finger at innocent youths and say “They raped me?” If she did, then yes, she should be condemned for more than just lying, frightening the community, and wasting the time of the police, but for trying to destroy the lives of innocent people.
However, if she just said “Some other kids raped me, I don’t know who they were” then I don’t think we can fairly accuse her of trying to send people to jail. If there was no rape, there could be no evidence other than her (false) testimony, so she’d have to be willing to pretend to recognize any suspected assailants in order for them to be imprisoned. If she did not plan to do this, it is possible that she might (wrongly) have believed that her lie was harmless.
Not that I wish to defend this kind of hoax, but I agree with bnorton that it’s possible that the girl was justifiably terrified of what might happen to her if she didn’t have a really impessive-sounding excuse. Under normal circumstances I’d think the lie of “some girl stole my phone” would be good enough without adding “and then some guys raped me”, so it wouldn’t surprise me to hear that there was more to the story…although I wouldn’t venture to guess what that “more” might be.
