Girl with a Pearl Earring

Ebert gave it 4-stars, I was leery.

I wasn’t doing anything last night, so I thought I would go see it. Since it was about an artist (Vemeer), and Scarlett Johansson was in it, I figured I could stay awake for a couple hours to watch it. I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie.

You get to see how people lived in 17th century Holland, that was interesting. You learn that artists are sometimes bought-out to do what other people want them to do.

The story is about a young maid that works for Vemeer. He eventually is ordered by his buyer to paint a portrait of her.

Sounds kind of dry and boring doesn’t it? Well, I guess you will just have to go see it for yourself. There is plenty of suspense and drama in this movie. It’s all done in hushed tones though, perhaps to parallel Vemeer’s style.
