So I’m starting to get hooked on internet radio. Friend o’ mine is really into pirate radio like Free Radio Santa Cruz. Good stuff as far as independent news and whatnot, but it doesn’t quite do it for me. Then I started searching around. Through Electronic-music.net I found SomaFM. Awesome downtempo, chillout kinda stuff. I highly recommend the Groove Salad or Secret Agent streams.
Now I want more. I have a fantastically wide range of music tastes and I’m looking for great streams in World Music, Jazz, Indie Rock, etc. Basically anything (except country…sorry).
Got any recommendations? No pay sites. Preferably no limited time scheduled shows. No genre restrictions. I want it all!
radiokeneally.com is just that - Mike Keneally stuff 24 hours per day, complete with ability to take requests via the web (one per 60 minutes - it’s automated).
Of course, I’m almost the only person on this board who listens to Keneally, but what the hell - you asked.
Shoutcast is a whole bunch of internet radio stations. I use Winamp with it… I’m not sure if you can use anything else. Doubt it.
SomaFM is on there, I listen to it occasionally (Groove Salad and Secret Agent are the ones I listen to) I’m also a big fan of Drone Zone and Cryosleep… Obviously I listen to them mainly at night, when I’m trying to sleep.
I’ve recommended it to others too, everone’s loved it.
I’m partial to WGUC 90.9 , Cincinnati’s classical radio station. The music’s interrupted sometimes with NPR snippets, but it’s my understanding that those’ll go away soon. Plus every night they’ll send an email playlist for the following day.
Steve Jones (Sex Pistols guitarist) has a show every day 12-2 Pacific
Henry Rollins has a show, as does Nina Blackwood (original Mtv VJ) and Dany Masterson (Hyde on 70’s Show)
Mostly altrock with a bunch of other stuff tossed in.
Digitally Imported, at www.di.fm, has a bunch of free winamp and windows media streams. Mostly trance/electronica and its ilk, but they also offer classical, jazz, new age and classical.
But seriously, it’s all about the trance, in many flavors – trance, vocal trance, hard trance, progressive, euro, goa-psy, deep house, hard house, classic techno…
You know, I listen to trance and I have no idea what half of these divisions really mean.
