Give me some of your non-popular favourite bands.

Dog: Man, those were fine choices. Reverend Horton Heat is not played on any radio I know of. And Bjork is a real free thinker who doesn’t seem to mind that a lot of people wouldn’t give her the time of day. She rules. Find some of her older stuff with the Sugarcubes.

As far as cutting edge music goes, it’s overrated. Every other day some simpleton thinks they have identified ‘the edge’, try to go two steps over and end up sounding liked warmed over Romantics.

I can’t believe you are near a college and don’t have access to at least some cool music. Napster? Go to Tower online and buy the following video: “URGH! A Music War” for some history of pop music eclectica. Crash frat parties and hook up with someone who hates the jock music as much as you do. Have fun with it!

Eisturzende Neubaten - Dogzilla, yes!!! These guys are GREAT! I especially dig their “FaustMusik” CD. Apparently they did the soundtrack for a German/Austrian production of the story…very strange indeed!

The Ataris - sk8rixtx, I agree, dude! They are DAMN good, and hopefully, if my band is still together, we’ll be playing with them in March 2001 in Charleston, WV! I’m REALLY looking forward to it!

Millencolin - Again, sk8rixtx, absolutley one of the best punk bands out there…next to NoFX and Bracket. Their new CD “Pennybridge Pioneers” is one of the best of 2000! And, when my band played Warped Tour in Cleveland, I got to meet the Swedes themselves! Very funny guys!

More groups I saw listed here that I like as well:

**311
Yo La Tengo
Morphine
Aquabats
VAST
RxBandits
NoFX - (I got to eat gyros with Fat Mike, too! :stuck_out_tongue: )
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
FenixTX

Hey sk8rixtx, you seem pretty punk-suave…if you get some time, check out my band JerkWaterJive at: http://mp3.com/jerkwaterjive We’re ska/punk/emo/whatever…kind of a mix between Goldfinger and RBF. Let me know what ya think!

I notice some people keep saying names of bands I really love or have only heard a few songs of but I do enjoy and plan on checking out more.

I love Great Big Sea (I own every CD except the new one which is a compilation of the others mainly with the exception of a few songs) I have mp3’s of Placebo, Toadies and love Tea Party. They play Placebo and Tea Party on the local rock station… not often but I do catch them sometimes. I love Every You, Every Me by Placebo and Possum Kingdom by Toadies.

One group I have noticed no one seems to know and I mean no one is Savatage The only cd of theirs I’ve heard is Streets a Rock Opera but I know they have others. I got turned onto them by a friend on the net and now I’m waiting for my copy of Streets to arrive at HMV. I know they are an older group (possibly same time as Queen? I dunno exactly) but everytime I mention them to people in the age group who might know about them they look at me like Who? The only person I know who knows about them is the guy who got me interested in them. Has anyone else here heard of them?

Trout Fishing In America

Love(d) the Sugarcubes. Forgot to mention: the Pixies, Black Flag, Henry Rollins Band, anything Kim Deal (sp?) does (Breeders, etc.), some of Sonic Youth’s work, Primus, Meatpuppets, Butthole Surfers, Trickster, Orbital, Husker Du and many more. I was a punk in a metal-head’s body. Which is why I think I like the Industrial scene probably the most.

I agree with your assertion about cutting edge music, but I think it’s all about semantics. What seems cutting edge to you and me obviously seems pretty mainstream to some others around here.

Further, I couldn’t believe I moved to a college town as big as this one and found the music scene to be so lame here. I think it’s mostly due to a couple factors: Southern Rock and Country influences coupled with a geographical no-man’s-land, combined with being a small market to begin with (less than 250,000). But still… George Clinton lives somewhere around this area and you’d think there would be more going on.

Napster is a good suggestion and I do utilize that quite often. I also am in contact with people involved in music scenes elsewhere (like Chicago) and sometimes those friends turn me on to bands it would take me years to discover. And I did just meet someone (who moved here from California and still has some taste) who likes the same types of music, so we’ve been trading CDs and I could be back in the loop soon. It could happen. I could become hip again.

As far as crashing frat parties: I’d sooner chew my own foot off and march through a salt mine. Mostly because nobody at that kind of party is into music, most are just boys trying to hook up. And I’m allergic to Syphilis (can’t spell that either!). Most of the college kids around here seem to be into R&B and pop… The true alternative scene (NOT “alterna-pop”) must be pretty underground. Seeing how I’m now over 30… I don’t think the rave kids will let me in! They’ll think I’m a cop or something. So here’s a comment to all the trendy under 25 Dopers: You can still grow up and be considered “cool”. In fact, a good friend of mine is a senior at FSU and introduces me to her friends as the only cool grownup she knows. So there. :stuck_out_tongue: Incidentally she and her boyfriend listen to tired-out classic rock and metal.

I do appreciate your suggestions, though. And thanks to all who have posted here: now I have a list of bands I wasn’t aware of… I will probably waste the rest of my day Napster-ing! Please don’t tell my boss!

Tiger Trap, Belle and Sebastian, Throwing Muses et al., James, My Bloody Valentine, damn I can’t think of any now that I’m not in front of my CDs.

Circle of Dust / Celldweller - I guess I’d classify them as “Modern Industrial”, but the range of styles is all over the place. Very hard-hitting at times while remaining melodic. Great songwriting.

Super 8 - This band put out one album and then faded off into obscurity. You can’t buy this album anymore (even though it only came out a few years ago), but if you can find it, grab it. Great rock/funk/soul hybrid, and the drummer lays down some great stuff.

There are quite a few good Chicago-based bands that got signed to major labels, but never really took off. If you get a chance, check out Mind Bomb and Acumen Nation.

(slaps forehead)

How could I forget King’s X?? Honestly, you haven’t seen live music done right until you’ve seen them live. I’ve caught them twice now, and both times and left with my jaw on the floor.

Wow are you a touchy guy! If you took my comment as a personal stab I apologize. I meant it as a joke. As long as your going to be touchy, I will as well… here goes.

I am from Tampa and am fully aware of the music scene within Florida and yes, if you listen to the regular radio stations all you get is CREED. HOWEVERYou mentioned that you go FSU? A college? With a college radio station? Lets see… Florida bands with college radio appeal?

Hot water music
Less than jake
Clairmel (R.I.P)
Panthro UK 13
LimP Biskit (from the panhandle I believe)

Just to name a few. And if you did base your choices on popularity in the mainstream media like radio/mtv etc. I still had a valid point. Bjork (didnt she win a VMA?), 311, Perfect Circle, Tool, and Portishead have all enjoyed a good deal of radio and video airplay.

As I said earlier I did not mean my comment personally, I was just joking around. No I do not see myself as better than anyone because I know obscure bands. As a matter of fact I think this thread is great because I didn’t know some of these and will check them out. I meant to harm… Hugs?

Sorry Dogzilla. I just re-read your post and noticed that you said your college radio sucks. I’ve been to FSU a long time ago and caught some cool stuff. That stinks that they aren’t any good anymore. Those bands I listed are still really good though. You should check them out on Napster.

Actually, I’m a touchy GIRL… But I prefer the term “oversensitive.”

{{{{pezpunk}}}} No harm, no foul… just coffee… no big whoop. (And not remotely offended, just amused, you thought I am male.)

You do have a valid point b/c some bands I mentioned were on the radio, BUT: I have never heard Portishead on the radio here and Bjork and 311 get very little airplay here – either by the alternapop station or by the FSU station. Have you been up here? It’s a totally different world from the Big Cities (Tampa, Orlando, Miami, Jax, etc.) and a fat musical bummer, man. Anyway thanks for naming of those Florida bands for me … I’ll check 'em out.

Other nitpicking points to clarify, just because I’m anal:

  • I don’t go to FSU, just live nearby. Too old for the college scene. Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt.
  • The FLORIDA music scene is pretty good – I used to live in South Florida and was way more in touch back then. Lots happening in Orlando and Tampa as well – I even wrote for JAM Entertainment News back in the day! However, take a trek up here sometime: The music scene here in the redneck part of Florida is dismal, my friend.

Oh yeah, and one more (Which did play in Tally-town recently):

Fishbone!

(How could I forget?)

Party at Ground Zero! Not quite rock, sort of benzedrine ska, a little rap. Doggone, Dog, I haven’t seen Fishbone since 1985.

Pere Ubu
Sun 60

Mmmmmm yes! C.o.D.! Very cool. Have you heard Klay Scott’s side project from about 5 years ago called Argyle Park?

But regardless, if you wanna hear it, I doubt any record store will have it. I had to special order my copy from Media Play. If you really do like Circle Of Dust, then I’d say it’s worth it to order it yourself!

Well, now there’s AP2. From their website I read:

There’s more information on them at Flaming Fish Music. I have yet to hear the new CD “Suspention of Disbelief”, but am really looking for to it when I get it for Christmas!

OK, so this thread has finally brought me out of lurker mode…

Among others, I like the following bands, most of which you’ve likely never heard of:

The Angels (Australian, sometimes known as Angel City in the US)
The Toll
Fischer-Z
999
Bonzo Dog Band
Lusk
The Horse Flies
Steeleye Span
Syrup USA
The Swirlies
School of Assassins
FirePig
The Fools

…not to mention the following bands, which while not particularly obscure are not exactly “popular” currently, either:

Lard
Treat Her Right
The Sheila Devine
The Call
Love Spit Love
Hothouse Flowers
Temple of the Dog
Matthew Sweet
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros
David Gilmour
’s solo work
Procol Harum (no one knows anything beyond Whiter Shade of Pale)
Midnight Oil (everything other than the Diesel and Dust album is pretty obscure)
Travis

…and I second the nominations of the following (although I don’t really consider too many of these “obscure”):

XTC
Tool
A Perfect Circle
Golden Earring
Morphine
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Mark Knopfler
(the new single is great)
Sebadoh
Stabbing Westward
Black Heart Procession

Black Heart Procession is the only really obscure band on this portion of my list, IMHO - I don’t have any albums yet, but saw them live a few weeks ago at the suggestion of a friend.

Also, I have to disagree with pldennison and say that I think Nonesuch is one of XTC’s better albums, and somewhat stronger than Wasp Star.

I know there are more, but as labradorian said, without my CDs in front of me, I’m not thinking of them all.

dropzone, I know exactly what you’re talking about (I have heard of the Incredible String Band, BTW, although I’ll confess I don’t know their music particularly well) – I was watching MST3K one night (I wish I could remember the film they were doing) and in one scene the camera is panning over this very beatnik band, one of the robots said “…and looking very relaxed, Adolf Hitler on vibes”, which is a quote from the Bonzo Dog Band’s “The Intro and the Outro” – I felt like I was probably one of three people watching who got the reference.

Oh, and Deacons Trucked, since no one else seems to have answered, your sig is from Tool, from the song “Pushit” on the album Aenima. (a great album - I can’t wait for their new one)

Fishbone rock heavily! I love them (and have seen them a few times recently)

The rest of the CD is as good or better, mostly better. It’s one of my favorite albums.

Glad we cleared that up Dogzilla you nutty girl (see I called you a girl this time). {{{DOGZILLA}}}. I used to read JAM all the time. Great publication. In fact I met my old band through there.

Does Fishbone still rock? I stopped listening to them after give a monkey a brain. I saw them with Primus about 10 years ago and was really impressed but I saw them with NOFX 5 years ago and was suprised how downhill they went. There are only a few original members right?

I’ve just recently discovered that 16 year old punks don’t necessarily know who Adam and the Ants were. Does that mean they are obscure now?

no, I think that means you’re talking to some stupid kids.

Switchblade Symphony
Finger Eleven
A Perfect Circle
Unwritten Law
Jars of Clay
Course of Empire
Bad Religion
