I usually order my pies online and pay with an ATM card, but give the guy his tip at the door, one so he gets it, two so he doesn’t think I’m a stiff if he’s not made aware of the online tip before delivery. Anyhoo, I usually have dollars on hand for this, but yesterday was contemplating a pie order but when I realized I would have to have given the guy five bucks in change, I ate a sandwich instead. I’m wondering what opinion other have on the subject- thanks.
It would depend on how bad I wanted some pizza. If I wanted it really bad, I’d just tip the $5. Hell, it’s Christmastime, you know? An unexpected big tip is a happy thing. If another $3 won’t break the bank, I say just tip it.
I meant, how many coins, as opposed to bills, before he thinks you’re an asshole for emptying out your change jar on him? Two dollars worth? Five? Ten?
As long as it wasn’t all pennies or nickels, I can’t imagine someone being upset by a tip of coins. It all spends the same.
Then again, I never did delivery for a living, so I may be completely wrong.
But, once again, we don’t know your location. Here in Canada a $5.00 tip might just consist of 3 coins.
Anyway, all joking aside, I don’t think anyone would complain if he got a whole bunch-o-coins that added up to five bucks.
I’ve worked with pizza delivery guys for years - it might be a bit annoying if you hand them a ton of change they have to deal with at the door, what would you do, just dump it in their hand? They’d appreciate the good tip though, as long as they didn’t drop it all on the ground on accident. It sounds odd, but if you’re gonna hand someone a ton of coins like that maybe put it in a baggie or something? Never really seen that though. But they wouldn’t be anywhere near annoyed as if you’d try to pay for your whole order in change, which I’ve dealt with in-store. Someone dumping $22 in smaller change on your counter on a busy Friday does not a good night make. Glad I finally quit that job.
And as long as you give the change to the driver in a manageable way, he should be able to cash it out from the drawer later.
If you paid for the pizza online and are just tipping the driver, then give him all the change you want. It’s not like he needs to count it.
I also give cash tips when I pay with a credit card, although a few posts by Doper waitrons has nearly convinced me I’m being paranoid on their behalf for no good reason - apparently getting stiffed on credit card tips is actually uncommon.
But in the situation you describe, I’d actually just go ahead and put the tip on the card, if I didn’t have bills to give the driver. I’d be annoyed with a handful of change, baggie or no, just because no, it doesn’t spend like bills, really. It’s got to be exchanged for bills for a moderate to large purchase, or you take the hassle of a handful of change and “pay it forward” to the poor cashier you try and use it with. I suppose if I was seriously starving, I’d be happy for any nickels I got, but I think the chances that your delivery guy would be annoyed with a lot of change are greater than the chances that he won’t get his tip on the credit card.
You can always say, “Oh, hey, I put the tip on the credit card when I ordered on-line; you’ll get that from your boss, right?”
If I didn’t realize I only had change until *after *ordering and paying on-line, I guess I’d use the baggie method, or some other container, and effusive apologies for the inconvenience.
