Well, it finally happened…guess I have to stop living off my sugar daddy and start contributing to the household again.
Yesterday afternoon I had an interview at a company called Carfax (www.carfax.com) in Fairfax and they offered me a job ON THE SPOT. They were blown away by my qualifications and seemed genuinely enthusiastic to get me in there. When I spoke to their recruiter initially, she said they had two finalists they were considering but wanted to talk to me anyway…so I guess they must’ve liked what they saw. It didn’t hurt that I finished their “writing test” and sent it back in a couple hours when they didn’t even expect me to finish it. (YAY!)
I got the formal offer letter today so I feel secure in announcing it. And, naturally, once I get an offer, PCRM calls to say they’re interested AND the temp-agency FINALLY calls back to tell me they’re interested…I’m sure I’ll be inundated next week with calls from companies who suddenly want me.
Okay, so some details for all y’all…it’s a great “public relations specialist” position doing all the things I love doing (writing, graphic design, media relations, etc.) with incredible benefits. I’m so relieved. And the benefits! Well, let’s see…
Vacation: First year - 2 weeks, second year - 3
weeks and fifth year - 4 weeks.
Fairly easy commute; free on-site parking in a
beautiful office complex that includes a huge courtyard
in the middle with foliage, fountains and park-style
benches. [HEY SATAN! I’ll be like 2 or 3 blocks from your dad’s place; for DC Dopers who attended the Thai restaurant souiree, its 5 minutes from that plaza!]
Their dress code in MANDATORY casual…
The “downside” (according to them) is I may occasionally be called upon to come in very early or late at night (or occasionally out of town) to appear on the news on the firm’s behalf; though mostly my supervisor, the marketing manager, will be doing that.
The schedule is completely flexible (whatever hours I choose) and every Friday they have a free luncheon for the staff. They even have a balcony with a table for breaks or lunch.
And the salary is more than my previous job.
All the other benefits (medical, dental, 401k, etc.) are to be had, but I’m covered by hubby…
Lastly, since their next orientation isn’t until July 24th, I can now treat the next week or so as a vacation before starting (since the last 4 weeks here have hardly been relaxing setting up the apartment and looking for work).
Thanks to EVERYONE here who helped or made suggestions…
Thanks for the “Congratulations”, hooping, hallering and dancing. TODAY…I got cookies delivered to my door as a “welcome to the firm” gift–I’m think I’m going to like this firm!!
I’ve been here since November. About a month ago, we got t-shirts from Compaq - and that only because the managers had “extras.” We joked around about taking a marker and writing on the backs of the shirts, “I survived Y2K and all the other BS at ****** company, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.”
Congratulation, PETA! Way to Go!
I just wanted to let everyone know how absolutely proud I am of Peta. When we discussed moving from Cleveland, one of the things I was most worried about was asking her not only to leave the only area she’s ever lived in, but to leave a job she really, really loved. It tore me up to ask her to do it. She was starting to get really discouraged after sending out resumes for a month, and felt like her lack of a B.A. was hurting her. I knew that there was a job out there for her, and I’m thrilled that she’s found one that she’s excited about! :*
N.B.–Peta has, in the past, acted as a sugar mama. Shortly after we were married, I quit my job to go back to school full-time and finish my B.A., while she worked full-time, AND started taking classes towards her degree.
Falcon: Good things come in threes, and since Peta just got a job, and I finally became a permanent employee here, I expect you’ll get good news on the job front real soon now.
