My glasses lenses have non-reflective coating, and they are always dirty from oil and I can’t get them decently clean while on the go (they smear–or worse yet–they get scratched). They are too much of a hassle for my personality type.
And are they supposed to cut down reflection/glare for the WEARER (or just keep their poker-playing friends from getting a peek at their hand)?
Despise it. I don’t like the way it looks, and once it’s rained on them a couple of times, they get that “oil slick ing the driveway” look about them. It’s awful.
Actually, I rather like mine. I think some of it is using a decent cleaning fluid. My favorite are the pre-moistened towelets from Lenscrafters. The alcohol and other stuff in the fluid keeps the glasses clean while not hurting the anti-reflective coating.
I will admit though, if something happens to screw up the coating, then it really does suck.
My sister loves hers too, but I feel that the risk of scratching them are too high to justify them (for my lifestyle, that is). Besides, the glasses shop people really seemed to be pushing this option despite the ease of scratching the coating. Just a few years ago I recall they were insisting I get the anti-scratch lenses because regular lenses could “get scratched so easily”.
So perhaps I started off feeling that anti-reflective coating was a sales ploy more than a benefit to the wearer.
I love mine. When they get really dirty I clean them with a little dishwashing detergent. The spray stuff from the drugstore smears the coating (even though it says it’s safe for all coatings).
I definitely love mine. I’m in front of a computer screen all day, so I really notice it’s easier on the eyes. As for oil slicking, I use the special little treated cloth that they gave me with my glasses. It works fantastic.
They tell me that when it starts to not work very well, just wash it in warm water. I haven’t even had to do that yet and I’ve had my new ones for probably 6 months now.
VERY mixed bag. I can’t breathe on my glasses to clean them because of this stuff, and I can’t use water or tissues. I have to use the various rag things (which I lose a lot :p), and those have over time scratched the coating a bit. I like the reduced glare - although all it really does is turn it green - but I’ll think long and hard about getting more glasses with it.
Not all lenses are alike. Material with high index of refraction allows the lens to be thinner, but it also increases glare. My eyes are so bad that I only buy the best (highest index of refraction) plastic lenses. So I always get non-reflective coatings.
I can’t live without the anti-reflecting coating. The reflections in the corner of my eyes drive me nuts without it.
Cleaning is a hassle, but I’ve got it down to a science. A little soap (preferably dishwashing soap, but I can use hand soap), rub soap onto lenses with thumb and index finger. Put glasses under warm (not hot) running water, and rub lenses with my fingers until they squeak. Dry with toilet paper. I’ve only ever got one scratch on my lenses this way, on my last pair.
I buy the best lenses I can, with the anti-reflective coating, anti-scratch, and high index plastic. Usually Nikon lenses.
They are VERY high maintenance lenses, but the results are phenomenal. No scratches yet but these things collect dust like it’s going out of style. Best part about them, is I don’t get those white blocks over my eyes when my picture is getting taken. I used to have a pair of lense-less glasses just for pictures.
I live and die by my glasses. Can’t see much without them. Usually wearing them all day only taking them off to shower or rub my eyes. I’ll even wear them to sleep sometimes(falling asleep while watching tv is a common occurance). Would kind of be like denying myself to just take them off for a photo that is supposed to capture the essence of me.
I have it on mine but with the exception of having to clean them all the time, which doesnt bother me, I have yet to notice any change in the whole glare thing.
