Glee: 1.10, "Ballad" (open spoilers)

I loved the faces and the monologues.

And I hope Susie comes back. Sooo hoping.

I think he was doing that to sabotage Quinn and Finn, so that way Finn runs to him.

I wonder how Finn is going to find out. Either he’s going to tell someone they didn’t have sex or Mercedes is going to tell Rachael and/or Kurt.

I think it’s just evidence of him being an amateur and taking the training a bit too literally. I have had vocal teachers who instruct people to pronounce words in more of a British accent to help emphasize the vowels and sound better, but as evident here someone who isn’t as experience will then over-emphasize and sound off. This is obvious in a lot of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s phrasing in the Buffy musical as well.

I think the “they’ll think I’m pooping!” line was my favorite as well. Will’s mash-up and Lean on Me were my favorite vocal parts of this episode, definitely.

Also, they really need to tone down the AutoTune with Finn. It’s so obvious and harsh on my ears. Let him sing more naturally; if he’s not perfect, do another take!

I loved this whole episode. Finn singing to the sonogram was so sweet, and I loved his mother’s reaction to the whole thing. She’s good people.

Terri is really the weak link in this show. Making Rachel clean the house was hilarious, but the faked pregnancy is just unsupportable.

One of the things I really like about Glee is that it focuses on different characters each week. It would get dull if it were all Rachel all the time, but getting to meet Quinn and Finn’s parents was good. The Artie episode was great, too. A bit more Puck and I would be deliriously happy.

I do feel sorry for Quinn. Obviously lying to Finn is the wrong thing to do, but who doesn’t do stupid things when they’re 17 and under a lot of pressure? And she is clearly under a lot of pressure - from her parents, from her peer group, from the Cheerios, and from her own expectations. High school is not a good point in time for understanding what’s really important.

I don’t recall her on any shows with talking animals, but I do recognize her from Everwood, a bunch of bit parts elsewhere, and a minor role on Grey’s Anatomy most recently. I found it hard to still accept her as a high schooler.

Totally, and add to that the fact that she had things reversed. It only takes knocking up a girl to be a father, but it takes being there to be a daddy. And as Maury would say “Puck… You ARE the father”. He also wants to be the daddy, but that’s another issue, and Mercedes’s horrible advice hopefully will be shown for what it is later on. Finn will find out eventually, and the longer it is before he does, the worse the fallout’s gonna be. Add to that Puck has every right (and responsibility) to be a part of his kid’s life, regardless of Quinn’s opinion. Mercedes, you don’t know jack, stop tryin to act like you all wise just cause you the loudmouth of the group.

The lack of Sue in the episode was disturbing. Every episode needs plenty of Sue, without her things get too sappy.

I predict that Sue will get to sing in a future episode. Jane Lynch was great in A Mighty Wind.

The “talking animals” was a subtle reference to Wonderfalls- unless somehow Sarah Drew has played another stalker woman in a show featuring talking things that shouldn’t talk.

I recognize Sarah Drew from her voice work on Daria, guest appearance on Wonderfalls as young twenty-something in 2004, and recurring role in “Mad Men” as Sal’s wife. Generally speaking, I should think she is too old to play Suzy Pepper believably. For example, I like Allison Brie as Annie on “Community,” but think she’s too old to play eighteen convincingly because I’ve seen her several times as Trudy Campbell in “Mad Men.”

But, like Shirley Henderson as Moaning Myrtle in “Goblet of Fire,” Sarah Drew played such a cartoon-y character that her previous roles and her age didn’t bother me enough to take me out of the story. (Of course it also helps that most of the kids on Glee are significantly older than their characters.)

I didn’t get that though - that was evil!coach lady’s nickname for him, why would Will call him that?

I love Other Asian (Matt)- he’s just so damn happy when he sings

Ryan Murphy, the producer, did that kinda of plot before, in his other show “Popular”. I think it would be a great way to go.

As for a BF for Kurt…my vote is for a “closeted bi athlete” maybe a certained Mohawked fotball player??

Other Asian is Mike Chang. Matt Rutherford is the name of black football player/glee clubber who didn’t appear this episode because he had a spider in his ear/because they needed someone out to make the Schuester/Rachel thing work.

I didn’t like this episode. I watched it on Hulu and ended up fast forwarding through a lot of it because all of the subplots made me uncomfortable.

Needs moar Sue.

Zoink-thanks. Maybe I should stick with ‘othe asian’. Or ‘really happy guy’

No problem. Mike is ridiculously happy all the time, isn’t he?

I made an effort to learn all the kids’ names because I felt ridiculous using all of Sue’s nicknames for them when describing episodes I clearly enjoyed. But I don’t even know if Mike or Matt’s names have come up in dialogue.

As for Puck and Mercedes, **Dark2Phoenix **brought me around to not thinking she’s a total jerk for not telling Finn. Remember, as far as Mercedes knows, Finn and Quinn have been having sex. So when Puck says, “I’m the father,” she might think he’s lying, or that the baby is probably Finn’s, and moreover, not realize how Quinn is completely screwing Finn over. It’s still scuzzy to cheat on your boyfriend, and to assume that the baby is his if you had sex with someone else, but it’s less scuzzy than knowing for sure that he’s not the father and trapping him anyway.

I cannot wait for Finn to discuss the mechanics of this supposed conception with a responsible adult. His mom would be a great candidate - I was really touched by her reaction to the news.

Schuster called Other Asian “Mike” at some point, possibly even this episode. (I didn’t look up any character names on IMDB until just now, but already knew his name was Mike). He’s all about building their self-esteem, so I think he probably wrote “Mike,” but First Asian (Tina) pronounced it “Other Asian.”

I think Puck told Mercedes because he was assuming she’d immediately get back on the phone and spread the word, thus getting the secret out while absolving him of responsibility for doing so. That she put him in place surprised the hell out of him. And me.

There’s a reality about being a father versus being a baby-daddy that Mercedes may have had driven into her much more than most other characters on the show. I actually found her reaction to be one of the more gritty decisions the otherwise lighthearted show has taken. Most black women growing up in the US in this generation are very acutely aware of the difference between a baby-daddy and a father and if they had to choose between a jerk like Puck and a generally decent guy like Finn, especially if the mother-to-be has already made a clear choice, may well do the same thing.

I still think it’s the wrong thing in general, but if they’re writing Mercedes somewhat realistically, I can see it.

Overall, I think Puck is shaping up to be one of the more interesting characters. A trainwreck, but still interesting. The scene a couple weeks ago where his family was watching Schindler’s List and eating sweet and sour pork to celebrate Simchat Torah, that was priceless. The little girl screaming and running out of the room and no one batting an eye or trying to comfort her, totally over the top and hilarious. The fake injury so he can get marijuana for the cupcakes, and the fact that he’s using his pool cleaning business to seduce MILFs, I just can’t look away. And he’s a good singer, far better than Finn with his auto-tune.

Enjoy,
Steven

I wonder why they chose an actor to play Finn who is not actually (at least based on some quick Wikipedia-ing) a trained/expert singer, as opposed to Lea Michele, who plays Rachel, and is a broadway leading lady.

I’ve been wondering that for some time. Pretty much all the singing leads, and a number of the supporting cast, have serious music chops. Puck is Mark Salling also known as the front man for Jericho

Rachel, as you mentioned, is Lea Michele, who originated the female lead for the smash hit Spring Awakening and has literally spent her life on stage, including a stint as young Cosette, probably when she was ~9(the usual age for a young Cosette, although I think some have gone up to 11, depending on the actress).

Although he usually plays it low key on Glee, one of the biggest talents in the cast is Matthew Morrison(Mr. Schuster). He originated the very dance-intensive role of Link Larkin in the Broadway hit Hairspray, and went on to earn a Tony nomination for his role as Lt. Cable in the current South Pacific revival. He’s one of those extremely rare performers, a triple threat. I didn’t recognize him when Glee first started, but after “Bust a Move” I just had to look him up. My wife and I looked at each other and said “Who IS this guy!?” We both knew he MUST have had Broadway experience because there just isn’t another institution in modern America which trains men to be triple threats of his caliber.

Asian(also known as Tina) is another Spring Awakening veteran and has done other work on Broadway as well.

Dianna Agron(Quinn) seems to have been chosen for her looks and acting abilities(which are respectable), but her vocals are cringeworthy. Her solo in “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” was hard to sit through.

Chris Colfer(Kurt) is a dancer foremost and, according to Wikipedia, impressed the creators so much they wrote a role in for him. Someday he may be a triple threat, but not without more work on his vocals.

Cory Monteith(Finn) on the other hand, seems to have been picked pretty much solely for his acting chops. Which seems reasonable, he does have some pretty good comic timing, except he looks like a pathetic loser when stacked up against Broadway powerhouses in the show’s highlight musical numbers. Maybe that’s what they were going for, but the more the show develops it looks like they figured he’d be able to develop his voice more than he has. The use of the auto-tune during Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” wasn’t very offensive, but the consistent use is hurting the character, IMHO.

Enjoy,
Steven
