Glee: 3.03 "Asian F" (open spoilers)

We get to meet Emma Pillsbury’s and Mike Chang’s parents tonight. Also Rachel and Mercedes are both out for Maria in West Side Story.

Harry Shum Jr is also getting his first solo.

The last time he sang it was a joke that his character couldn’t sing, just dance. I wonder if they’ll remember that.

I hope they don’t cast Mercedes as Maria- she’s just all wrong for the part. Maria has to be simultaneously a demure wallflower and a natural beauty who blossoms when in love and who a teenaged boy falls for instantly. That’s just not Mercedes; she’s too… well, since it describes me too I can say it… fat. Also Maria calls for a singer, Mercedes is a belter. Though she would be great as Anita and in the America number.

Okay, did the writers just forget that last week ended with a Kurt/Blaine cliffhanger? We’re at the second commercial break and I don’t think Blaine has even been in the background of any of the scenes.

Maybe Kurt murdered him so he’d have no competition for the role of Tony.

I watched the first half until my roommate asked me to change the channel because she’s behind in episodes and I’m not really into the whole Glee thing, but from the 3ish episodes I’ve seen, Kurt just seems whiny and annoying and I have a hard time imagining him as an endearing character like Tony.

Okay, Blaine showed up just moments after I posted, but I note that no one but Kurt has spoken to or even acknowledged him since then. Conclusion: Kurt murdered him but is deeply in denial/delusional and is hallucinating that Blaine is still alive.

IIRC Darren Criss was shooting a movie over the summer, so I assume that’s the real-world explanation why he’s been kind of scarce even though he’s a series regular now.

I read an interview with Lea Salonga today in which she said she’d be interested in playing Blaine’s mother. (Darren Criss is half Filipino in real life.) From her mouth to Ryan Murphy’s (bitchy) ears.

And he knocked it, if not out of the park, definitely off the far wall.

Agreed. I’m glad to see him getting more screentime before graduation. Now if only his abs could get some more screentime as well. I liked the call back to Figgins thinking Tina is a vampire, but I wish we got a “WTF?” reaction shot from Mike Chang, Sr after Figgins told him that.

I liked the dinner party stuff with Will and Emma’s parents. She has some pretty good reasons for keeping them at a distance. Still, I hope we see them again.

I loved all the musical numbers. Other than that, and I guess Mike Chang’s mother, the episode was a bit much of a downer. Definitely did not make me miss high school, with the stupid competitiveness and bullshit personal drama. Ugh.

But, didn’t they pretty much do the whole Rachel/Mercedes thing last season? Not that they still wouldn’t be competitive, but they seem close to treading over the exact same ground without even acknowledging that they’ve had the same conversations before. And is there supposed to be some reason that Mercedes is feeling ill?

This season has been lacking in abs shots. The preview for next week had a quick shot of Puck shirtless, though.

I love Glee’s ability to take serious subjects like mentally abusive parents whose adult children still suffer from, and throw in the absurdity of ginger supremacy (that’s not really a thing, right?). I have to wonder, though, whether that’s a plausible cause of OCD? I would have guessed that it’s an inborn trait, but I have no idea, actually.

I had high expectations for this episode, since last week was good and I’d heard some advance buzz from critics that this week was going to be even better, but it left me feeling pretty “meh”. The Mike Chang storyline was solid, albeit predictable. His dancing was great as usual and his singing is much improved. It was also good to see some more callbacks to plots from season one (Tina used to fake a stutter, Figgins believes Tina is a vampire) that were totally forgotten during season two. There were assorted other good minor bits, and I liked that Kurt finally showed his support for Blaine even if it seemed rushed and should have happened about 15 minutes earlier.

But this episode lost me around the halfway mark, and I think a big part of it was:

We’ve seen Rachel and Mercedes trying to out-diva each other at least two or three times before, and in “Night of Neglect” it seemed like they’d both gotten over their issues and buried the hatchet. I don’t need to see the same story play out again. Rachel joining the race for senior class president also seemed unnecessary. Kurt vs. Brittany has the potential to be really funny and interesting, but we’ve seen Kurt vs. Rachel before and I don’t need to see that storyline repeat too.

It didn’t improve my mood when the teaser for next week indicated that they’ll be doing Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night”. Which I suppose was inevitable, since Darren Criss and Kevin McHale actually appeared in the video for that song, but 1) I hate Katy Perry, and 2) this will be what, Glee’s fifth Katy Perry number? The woman’s only had two albums!

I was also unclear as to whether she was just making excuses or if she was actually sick. Really it seemed like pretty broad foreshadowing that she’s pregnant (first serious boyfriend + mysterious nausea = baby on board), but a quick search online indicates that actress Amber Riley has Tweeted that Mercedes is not pregnant.

Personally I felt like they should have saved the Emma storyline for another episode, or maybe not done it at all. There was enough going on in this episode as it was, and I think this is the third explanation we’ve had for Emma’s OCD – first that she had a very messy accident while visiting a farm as a child and became obsessed with getting clean, second that she’d been this way pretty much all her life, and now it’s her parents’ fault. Although I suppose if you were inclined to be OCD to begin with then having horrible abusive parents wouldn’t help matters.

This may be one of those episodes I’ll like better after a second viewing…but thinking of *that *just makes me mad about how FOX has changed the way their shows are handled online. Rather than going up online the day after they air, the delay is now eight days. Not even a week, but eight days, so anyone who misses an episode won’t be able to watch it before the next one is broadcast!

Was that Ralph from Happy Days?

Emma’s dad? Yup, the IMDb confirms it was Don Most.

Loved it.

Absolutely.

I really hope they don’t revist teen pregnancy, unless this time it involves an abortion. And no last minute miscarriages either; have the girl in question go to a clinic, get it done, then move on with her life. Fox does not have the balls to allow this.

I don’t think Figgins said anything out loud about Tina being a vampire, just that she is a problem student.

I’m pretty sure that when Chang Sr. said that “the girlfriend” should go, Figgins said something like, “Yes, I agree that Cohen-Chang and her vampire ways needs to go.”

StG

Yeah, that’s what I heard too.

Wow, for the first time, I find myself disagreeing with you. I thought this was the best episode of Glee in a long time. They went back to the original formula of focusing on the kids, and their individual reactions to things. The Mercedes storyline was very touching, and it has been coming for quite some time. She HAS been playing second fiddle to Rachel, and its time she didn’t hide in the shadows any longer. The Mike Chang storyline was just phenomenal. Acted well, played well, and when he danced with his mom, random dust in the room got in my eye.

This episode, to me, reminded me how well Season 1 went, and how good this show can be.

Yeah, I agree, Noelq, I am liking this season a lot so far – definitely back to the basics of what made us all fall in love with Glee season one.
