When Sue was talking about swag as a bribe to get the Gleesters on board with disco music, there was a quick montage from past episodes of Will and others offering similar “prizes” for some effort or the other. One of the clips was NPH holding up a New Directions jean jacket, from the episode he appeared in earlier. I don’t remember any audio with that flashback, however.
Turns out the Glee kids weren’t so anti-disco. In typical Glee (and other shows) fashion, pre-commercial, it was like, 'Mr. Shue, disco sucks" . Except now, after the commercial, we don’t think it sucks anymore and we’re down with doing a whole show devoted to it.
Also, I really hate Blaine’s voice.
AFAIC Mercedes is the best singer. She sang the hell out of that fire-related song. I came really close to not hating it.
“That fire-related song”? Disco Inferno?
Sigh. You young people.
This is at least more realistic than most of the show’s previous tribute episodes, where all the characters loved, loved, LOVED artists who were hugely popular 10-30 years ago.
I think he’s generally one of the better male vocalists on the show, but looking at the “You Should Be Dancing” video on YouTube (I missed this performance in the episode) I have to say this song is not well suited to his voice. His dancing would probably be fine on its own, but placed between the two best dancers on the show he doesn’t look too good on that front either.
I saw that the Onion AV Club review that **MaxTheVool **linked to above gave this episode an A-, the best grade any Glee episode received from the AV Club’s critic this season. Since I’m a dork this made me wonder about which Glee episodes had been rated the highest in our discussion threads this season. I pulled up all the season three poll threads and put the numbers into a spreadsheet.
Episodes in order of highest average rating (5=Love, 3=Meh, 1=Hate):
[ol]
[li]Yes/No (4.2)[/li][li]Asian F (4.0)[/li][li]Hold On to Sixteen (3.7)[/li][li]Mash Off (3.6)[/li][li]Heart (3.6)[/li][li]First Time (3.6)[/li][li]I Am Unicorn (3.5)[/li][li]I Kissed a Girl (3.5)[/li][li]Purple Piano Project (3.4)[/li][li]Pot O’Gold (3.3)[/li][li]On My Way (3.3)[/li][li]Saturday Night Glee-ver (3.2)[/li][li]Spanish Teacher (3.2)[/li][li]Big Brother (3.1)[/li][li]Michael (3.1)[/li][li]Extraordinary Merry Christmas (2.4)[/li][/ol]
There were somewhat different results if I sorted based on the combined percentage of people who voted “Liked” or “Loved”. “Hold On to Sixteen” did well on average because it was one of the least hated episodes of the season, not because it was one of the best liked. A higher percentage of voters liked/loved “Heart”, but that was a polarizing episode with a relatively high percentage of people who voted dislike/hate (23%).

[li]Yes/No (88%)[/li][li]Asian F (83%)[/li][li]Heart (71%)[/li][li]Mash Off (63%)[/li][li]First Time (61%)[/li][li]I Kissed a Girl (60%)[/li][li]Hold On to Sixteen (60%)[/li][li]I Am Unicorn (59%)[/li][li]On My Way (58%)[/li][li]Saturday Night Glee-ver (53%)[/li][li]Purple Piano Project (49%)[/li][li]Pot O’Gold (46%)[/li][li]Michael (45%)[/li][li]Spanish Teacher (45%)[/li][li]Big Brother (34%)[/li][li]Extraordinary Merry Christmas (22%)[/li][/ol]
I was surprised that “Yes/No” did so well, as I didn’t consider it a particularly memorable episode, but it received the smallest total number of votes of the season so it’s not clear how well the results reflect the opinions of our usual voters. It may also have benefited by comparison to the previous episode, which was “Extraordinary Merry Christmas”.
“Big Brother” ranks low on both lists because it was the episode people were most “Meh” about (44%); four other episodes (“Michael”, “On My Way”, “Saturday Night Glee-ver”, and “Heart”) received a higher percentage of dislike/hate votes but also more like/love votes. “Extraordinary Merry Christmas” is the least popular episode of the season so far by any measure, and the only episode that was disliked/hated by a majority (57%) of respondents.
I asked last week why I keep watching. This week did nothing to answer that question. I hated the music. Hated the “plot.” A couple of cute gags, but that was about it. Has Finn ever expressed interest in acting before? ever? An acceptance letter and a cheerleading scholarship that Sue can pull out of her ass without Santana even applying? It’s sad when the best part of the show was the shoehorning in of a reality show contest winner.
Sampiro, are you Statler or Waldorf? I’ll be the other one.
No Sugar Motta makes this one of the better episodes of the season.
