Gloria

Settle on argument between my mother and I–Did the Rolling Stones ever cover and have a hit with “Gloria”?

No, they didn’t.

Someone is thinking of The Doors, who did indeed cover and have a hit with Them’s “Gloria.” The Doors version is far more, um, risque.

According to the Rolling Stones lyrics website I often frequent, no. It lists all the songs they’ve written and performed and includes the ones they’ve covered. Gloria is not mentioned. Until I hear yes elsewhere, I’ll have to say no.

Aaaah! My first simulpost.

1,200-plus posts, and I’ve never been first in a simulpost before. Made my day

(Hope you were on the winning side of the argument, ThisYearsGirl.)

HAHAHAHA!
I’m 31 years younger than my mother; I wasn’t even born until 1981, while she grew up in the 1960s, and I know more about '60s music than she does!
HAHAHAHAHA!
Althought I gotta give her credit; Van Morrison does kinda sounds like a young Mick Jagger.

A Chicago area band called The Shadows of Knight recorded a cover version of “Gloria” in 1966 that reached the top 10 in the U.S. Them’s original recording only rose to #71 on U.S. charts.

“Gloria” did appear on the Doors’ “In Concert” album, but I don’t remember it actually becoming a hit.

No you don’t. Not if you’re confusing Van Morrison and Jim Morrison, anyway.

And I agree with Catrandom–the Doors’ cover of “Gloria” was something of a minor hit for them (at least among their fans), while I can’t remember the Rolling Stones ever covering it, even though I’ve probably owned all their albums at one time or another.

Them, fronted by Van Morrison, was the first band to record Gloria. It wasn’t popular at the time, but now I think it’s the one you hear most on the radio. My mother and I heard the end of Them’s version on the radio when she commented “Ick–I can just picture Mick Jagger running around and gyrating on stage,” when the argument started.

GAAAAACK!

Hoist on my own petard! I’m so used to youngsters confusing Van Morrison and Jim Morrison that I had a knee-jerk reaction and didn’t bother to check on Them and the original version of “Gloria” (of which I know absolutely nothing).

Now it’s my turn to admit that you may very well know much more about 60s music than me. No two ways about–you caught me out. You win.

Now I’m going to go off and slam my head in the car door a few times with the hope of recreating a good sixties high…

(And please accept my sincere apologies for my cocky–and WRONG–earlier post.)

I just can’t let this thread go by without reminding everyone of Patti Smith’s incredible version of the song. Maybe it wasn’t groundbreaking, but it blew the roof right off MY little teenaged world.
