As part of a costume, I need to glue hundreds of rhinestones onto some fabric, but have no idea what kind of glue to use. The backs of the rhinestones are shiny chrome-like foil or plastic. I need something that dries quickly and will keep them from falling off. Any suggestions? Thanks.
You might try a hot glue gun. Dries fast and, unless you plan to have lots of things rubbing against the rhinestones, should hold them as long as you need them to hold.
I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re going to wear this costume to Burning Man, though. Don’t want to create any moop.
Last time I checked, fabric and craft stores sold glue specifically designed to glue embellishments onto fabrics. Ask a sales clerk if you can’t find it. The glue won’t hold up to hot water or bleach or hard use, but it WILL stick the rhinestones to the fabric and keep them there for a while.
I just checked my bottle of Aleene’s Tacky Glue, which is a brand of all purpose craft glue. It specifically states that it’s not for washable wearables. Are you planning to wash this costume, or is it a one-time wearing?
You can get tons of information on this at the fashion forum on Dancescape. I think that GemTac is the most popular glue, but people also use something called E-6000. Post your question over there, and you’ll get lots of specific advice.
For placing the stones, a small birthday candle works well. (You put a dab of glue on the fabric, then pick up the stone by touching it with the end of the candle and pressing it into the glue). You can do several dabs of glue, then place the stones in them, then place more glue dots, etc.
I’d definitely go with the fabric glue–it’s flexible, so the glue won’t crack. Any fabric or craft store should have it. I’m going to be doing the same thing very soon, so I hope some other people share good ideas for gluing on rhinestones (and sequins, too).
