I graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1981. Although I now live in Tampa, Florida, I feel compelled today to wear red and white and exhibit appropriate Pioneer Pride. Just wondering if there are any other KHS or WGHS supporters on the SDMB.
For non-St. Louisans: tomorrow is the annual Turkey Day Game, a football game between two St. Louis County high-schools, the Kirkwood Pioneers and the Webster Groves Statesmen. It’s notable in that the game was first played in 1907 and is considered the oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi.
PerditaX this is your lucky day! I am a resident of Kirkwood, and all three of my kids graduated from KHS. Here’s your Turkey Day update.
It will be a JV game this year. Kirkwood is 10-0 and will be playing for the state championship on Saturday. This is, I believe, the third time it’s happened (the other two times, Webster was playing for the state title.) The coaches have agreed to play only the JV players so the starters will be ready for the championship game.
The game will be at Webster. Maybe because the JV teams will be playing, there’s a little less pre-game frenzy this year, but both cities will be wound up by kickoff.
Webster had a good, but not great season. Kirkwood, as noted, will play for the championship. The Pioneers’ success is usually attributed to the strong coaching staff the team has built over the last couple of years. And, although the JV teams will be playing, the varsity staff will be coaching.
But hey, it’s Turkey Day. Both teams will play above their levels!
Teehee!
I remember driving through Webster during Thanksgiving week doing the “Kirkwood Honk (first one above)”, then zooming off as any WGHS students in the area gave chase. Wonder if they still do that?
It’s not as bad as it sounds. I live on Forbes Road, less than half a mile from the interstate. We just jump on I-4 and take it through Malfunction Junction. When there’s no traffic, I can get from home to work in 25 minutes. If traffic’s bad, I have any number of alternate routes to avoid the bad spots. Once the I-4 construction’s done through the Interchange, it won’t be bad at all - it’s a lot better already, I have to say!
I grew up in Kirkwood, Missouri (or as we called it, Jerkwood, Misery) about msdfxmf years ago. The school colors: red & white; name: Pioneers. Now I live in a different state where the local school colors are red & white and the name: Pioneers. What are the odds?
