Go me!

I now have high speed internet. My apartment complex now offers a wireless internet service(1.5Mb Woohoo), so I was able to get rid of my dial-up account.

It was supposed to be easy, but it wasn’t. The package didn’t come until after 7p, so I was already getting a late start. I ran everything into my office and hooked it up. I got nothing. The frickin box couldn’t get a signal and it wouldn’t talk to my ethernet card. So I went digging through some boxes and found a few NICs. I picked out a 3Com and dropped it in, configured it, and still nothing. I finally decided it needed a better signal to work. So I walked to my bedroom(since it’s the closest to my office), plugged it in, and nothing. I started walking all over my apartment plugging the box in and waiting for a signal. I finally got a strong one. In my dining room. At the far end of the apartment. My apartment’s 1200 sq. ft. My dining room is not close. So, I pull out a bunch of CAT-5, RJ-45 ends, etc. to build a cable. No good. I’ve only got about 15-20 ft. So now it’s 8:45, and I need cable. I hauled ass to Micro Center(should have gotten a ticket) and arrived right before they closed up. Bought 50 ft. of cable and headed back home. Hooked everything up and life was good.

So now I have a computer sitting on my desk with it’s cover off, 4 or 5 NICs lying here and there, and 50ft. of CAT-5 running down my hall, through my dining room and onto the dinner table. When I get home, I’m going to have to find a better place for the box(possibly mounted to the wall) and tie down all the cable so I don’t trip over it. The whole ordeal sucked, but it was all worth it. That thing hauls ass.

Just something mundane and pointless I thought I’d share.

Hooray!! Have fun with it!
