As best I have been able to piece together, it’s all keyed off that “You last visited …” message on the main menu page of the Message Board.
Any posts after that time will appear as unread, regardless of whether or not you have actually read them. Any posts before that time will appear as read, regardless again.
I seem to remember a mod stating at some point that no one has figured out exactly how vBulletin determines what counts as when you were last here. I’ve taken an extraordinary amount of time replying to posts before to find that it reset my last visit and I’ve done nothing but browse for up to an hour at a time to find that it never did.
