I think people misunderstand what exactly happens at YearlyKos. It’s not like they say “Hey, you! Yeah, you, the guy in the pink thong with an American flag coming out of your ass! You want to end war and stuff? Come to our gathering and we will sing songs with acoustic guitars and strive mightily to overthrow Darth Cheney and his evil empire. Oh, and the convention handout for featured speakers this year is pants. Er, put these on now so everybody know how important you are. Oh non-specific deity who definately doesn’t love America, my eyes!” It’s more just a convention for liberal bloggers. As such, it’s not fringe, except insofar as anyone who isn’t a dyed in the wool Republican is fringe.
The obvious retort here is something along the lines of “but you guys call Ann Coulter fringe! Turnabout is fair play.” I answer that she makes wild and inflammatory statements, with some degree of regularity, and that she further stands behind them. Picking out somebody from the comments of Kos and saying “but here’s something worse!” is like saying that the Straight Dope is a bastion of bestiality because Hal Briston… well, the less said about that guy the better.
As for the reaction of the candidates, do you guys think it’s weird that they totally ignored Romney in their straw poll at the end? I mean, sure he’s mormon, but he’s only had the one wife and all.
