ruffian: I beleive demo was correct. “Whom” is nearly an obsolete word, much as “thee/thou” now is, and teaching kids the difference between “who/whom” is as useful as 'you/thou". The word serves no purpose, and when used correctly, as it so often is not, it only serves to make you sound like a pedantic prig… or an school teacher. The word only survives on artificial measures- it is time to pull the plug.
As far as typos (see, there is no need to type out “typographical errors”, “typos” will do fine) go, I distain those who point those out (except where they are funny), and I find those who waste time & energy on an entire new post to correct a minor error being, again, “pedantic prigs” . Of course, if the error changes the entire meaning, like if the word “not” was inadvertently forgotten, that is another thing.
With my fingers full of athritis, it is very hard to always hit the right keys, so I hope some will cut me a little extra slack in the typo dept.- and I need it!
candyb: well, you could write a letter to the newsaper, to the Board of Ed., etc. Sometimes it might just be a good idea to actually DO something about a problem, rather than bitching & whining.
You’re just about right. But, so am I. From my copy editing book Working With Words: A Concise Handbook for Media Writers and Editors:
I’m not sure about the consistent accuracy of the test, but it is what they suggested. As of this date, “whom” and “whomever” are still part of English grammar. If they phase it out, eh, one less rule to have to remember.
I feel lke i’m too old for this but…
** Candy Boi **-
I agree with you that the jock people are dumb as shit, collectively. I think if you got to know most of them individually, you would find that they are not all that different from you. They make fun of punks and goths and what have you because they are insecure… just like you are.
I was a former punk. A goth, too. Now I’m nothing. I dress the way I want and listen to the music I like- not becuase it can be neatly categorized into a subculture.
You must have read somewhere that young people adopt these looks to feel like they belong. Well, you are no better than the jocks you are bashing. you are making fun of them for dressing and acting a certain way, and listening to certain kinds of music. Weren’t you comlaining that they make fun of you?
I just think you should look really hard and figure how much of the goth stuff you actually like, and how much you like just because it’s goth. If you were really brave you would have the courage not to fit into any group. “boi?”
Jesus Christ, how hard ARE you trying to fit in to GOTH?
I have a few cd’s I bought during my goth stage and I laugh at how terrible it is-
Have you ever heard Faith and the Muse? Jesus christ, what the HELL was i thinking?
I will bet you my Conscience, and throw in my Self-Esteem, that in two to four years you will look back and realize how lame you were for quoting Manson on a message board.
Bullshit. You’ve even fucked up “there” in your e-mail address. It’s “they’re,” as in “they’re watching,” you fatuous clodpoll.
cornflakes:
Dammit cornflakes, until you are perfect, QUIT POINTING FINGERS!!!
BTW, C-boi, I get the idea (from another thread) that you think I was flaming you about the gym class. I was not. Rather, I was saying that you might want to focus on your performance over what other people (the jocks and even the coach) think.
ruffian: I have a better, more easily understood rule for using “whom”: unless you are writing dialog for an English butler- don’t.
Up two streets and take a right.
Idiot.
Goddman, can’t we all aggree that some people can be afforded the occassional slip-up, and move-on?
Think about it…
Take someone we all know to be one smart motherfucker, like, oh, I don’t know, say, how about, Coldfire.
or Diane
or Alphagene
or Unclebeer
or Mr. Cynical
or GaWd
or iampunha
or pepperlandgirl
or kellibelli
or canadiansue
or Ayesha
or aha
or me ( )
or Homer
or Doobieous
or Valerieblaise
or ChrisCTP
or Falcon
and so on and so on and so on.
If one o’ these folks happens to fuck up with spelling or grammar, it’s generally overlooked, because pointing out their errors is pointless and stupid, because we know it was just a simple mistake.
Now, take some asshole who repeatedly displays a complete lack of skills when it comes to positing an idea in written form. Someone who has not proven that they know what the hell they are doing and just made a wee mistake, and has only shown that they probably have a hard time with filling out the “Personal Information” section of a job application.
See the difference? We don’t need to point out the grammar and speeling mistakes of people who present themselves as knowing better, as long as it doesn’t become a habit.
But when someone obviously needs their “ignorance fought”, we shouldn’t hesitate.
shit.
Oh, like I’m going to listen to someone who obviously can’t even use the English language. Have you ever heard of proofreading?
(like I would ever badmouth you)
Well Lexi, thanks for calling me a smart motherfucker. I think
But I may be the exception to your example there. If done constructively, I for one really appreciate criticism on my spelling and grammar. As it isn’t my first language, I am always eager to improve my English. So please, don’t hold back when you see me butcher up your fine language. Tell me.
Wow. I wish these replies had a goddamn thing to do with Boi’s OP. On every other board to which I’ve ever posted, pointless flames concerning a person’s writing skills are considered not only poor etiquette, but downright trollish, especially when the reply doesn’t even bother to address the ideas contained in the OP. It’s arrogant, snide, and irresponsible. I’m frankly surprised by posters I’ve noticed to be intelligent, occasionally compassionate, and generally decent folks in other contexts. I know there are no rules in the Pit, but the fact that you’re following the letter of the law doesn’t make you any less of an asshole.
Anyway, it’s been ten years since I attended public school, but I can still sympathize. I think there have always been these little pecking-order cliques in high school. If you don’t believe me, read or watch “The Outsiders.” It’s about the same problem in a 1950’s or 60’s high school. I was never part of any social group, be they jocks, punks, skaters, skinheads, preps, or anything else. I have always hated conformism and have very little respect for “joiners” of any type. All these groups just foment discord. I hate to tell you this, but life is filled with overprivileged, undeserving zombies. The best you can do is make your own path and keep fighting. Good luck.
Oh, and Democritus, don’t be such a tool. You started all this shit, and in your arrogance, you missed “sow.” At least make sure you get everything right if you’re going to play editor.
