I really do. And the funny thing is, it’s not because the school sucks. I’m sure it’s a perfectly good school. It’s not because they’re consistently competitive in football. They recruit well, and so they deserve their success.
No, the reason why I hate them so much is that unspeakably annoying fight song that they play approximately once every 30 seconds. I’m not terribly interested in the game, but I’m always curious about the score, and so I’ve been checking every half hour or so. And without fail, every single time I check there’s the Florida State band playing that stupid fight song. It’s like nails on a chalkboard.
Lest you think that my ire is limited to Florida State, I also loathe the Atlanta Braves beyond all capacity for reason because they play the same damn song over and over during their games (or, more appropriately, the fams chant it, which is even worse).
That song should be banned. There should be criminal penalties for playing that song, punishable with 10-year sentences for the first offense and death for the second. Or, if that doesn’t fly with you the perpetrators should be forced to listen to it for a full 24 hours nonstop at high volumes. Vengeful? Absolutely. But fair.
You’re wrong, academically they are a pretty iffy school, especially when it applies to the athletic department, and they have a litany of criminal issues and suspect recruiting practices.
You were reading my mind when you posted this. I totally agree.
Just to head off some numbskull who is bound to take this wrong, I don’t hate the chant because of political correctness. I hate it because it’s really, really fucking lame.
The chant is even more annoying when FSU is beating your team. I guess that’s the point, but it gets overplayed to the point of poor sportsmanship (again, probably the point). It is liberating to return the chant when your team is beating FSU (for example, by a score of 34-7). It is also extremely satifsying to chant “Fuuuuuuck the Seminoles” over and over again while the chant plays.
Having said that, I implore all of us to keep the poor FSU fans in our prayers. I usually ask God to please forgive them for being 'Noles. Mercy is the mark of a great man.
One of my favorite student chants is the Gators’ that goes “I said it’s great, to be, a Florida Gator” etc. When I first learned it in Israel I couldn’t stop singing it with the UF kids. Granted, I was stone drunk at the time.
It seems to me that a lot of football coaches are recuiting thugs. When such schools refer to themselves as institutions of higher learning I want to gag.
